Springsteen's "Born in the USA" is a classic example of a misunderstood song, used on a number of occassions by American conservative politicians as some sort of patriotic anthem when it's actually a protest against the treatment of Vietnam war veterans.

Today by the Smashing Pumpkins seems like a pretty happy song on the surface but the lyrics are quite dark i think that makes it even better though.

Madonna's "Like A Prayer" can be interpreted as being a song about a conversation with God, or about giving someone a blowie.

If the song were about God then it would actually be a prayer, not like one. The lyrics have always sounded sexual to me but maybe that's just my dirty mind!

I actually didn't belive this till i googled it. madonna even says it herself - the songs about sex and god and how they both give pleasure. Damn. We sung this at church.

Really agree about the wedding songs that really shouldn't be, but I still don't get rita ora's RIP is she killing herself?

I don't like RIP but I've always thought that it was just her saying goodbye to the "old" her and saying hello to the "new" her.

Greased Lightning

I don't know about now but when I was a kid Greased Lightning used to get played a lot at school discos, kids parties that sort of thing. I also think i've seen it on family party compilation CDs. People appear to be oblivious to the fact that the song is quite adult,

People seem to think the song is about guys singing about their car and how they're going to upgrade it to be a great race. That's mainly true, but the song is actually about guys who are doing that...in order to impress, pick up and screw girls.

The lyrics in Greased Lightning are pretty direct about this

'With a four-speed on the floor They'll waiting at the door
You know that ain't no s**t we'll be gettin' lots a tit In Grease Lightning'

''With new pistons, plugs, and shocks I can get off my rocks''

''You are supreme...the chick's 'll cream''

''You know that I ain't bragging she's a real pussy wagon''

that's exactly what it is about. the youtube comments seem to think it is about her getting into the illuminati. like a rihanna good girl gone bad kind of thing. but, you know, how they can get on youtube. if the comments arent about one direction, they are about the illuminati.

I think people always misunderstand I Should Be So Lucky, which is obviously about unrequited love, though it doesn't help that it's got such a happy tune.

Lady Gaga's JUDAS is another one. She's not actually in love with Judas from the bible, its an extended metaphor about loving someone who's manipulative over someone who will actually care for her.

On that subject, her Edge of Glory is one I misconstrued..I was sure that was about orgasms.

It's about her Grandad. But i can see a sexual theme in it if you look at the lyrics in a different way

Leona Lewis song 'Happy' is often misunderstood. She isn't singing about 'wanting to be happy' as she is so miserable, what she is singing is 'no matter what life throws at me I am going to try and be happy, even if the worst things happen (world just throws me off the edge, my feet run out of ground) then you can fight through it and find happiness.

Exactly. I don't know how people haven't worked that out.

I must admit the line 'in the midnight hour, I can feel your power' I never really thought she was referring to God

Isn't it obvious what Luca is about how could you get confused with that one with lyrics like 'They only hit until you cry and after that you don't ask why and 'Yes i think i'm okay
I walked into the door again, If you ask that's what i'll say and it's not your business anyway I guess i'd like to be alone
With nothing broken, nothing thrown.

The "they can fight it with their steely knives but they just can't kill the beast" is a reference to getting medical help that doesn't actual solve the addiction, not some dudes trying to fight some demon with swords. And yes, this should be obvious but surprisingly people that go to university can be shockingly stupid.”

I thought it was widely accepted to be about addiction, I've never heard of anyone genuinely thinking it was about a hotel.

Nelly Furtado's "Big Hoops" (bigger the better) is not about big, hoopy earrings but has a rather dirty sexual meaning instead as hoop is a slang word for anus

I thought that Sam Sparro's Black And Gold was about him wanting to be next to an lover at first but when listening more closer to the lyrics I realized that the song is about his doubt about God not existing.

Merril Bainbridge's single "Mouth" is not about sex but many people thought so. Merril said herself that the song wasn't about sex. Haha.

It is nothing to be embarrassed about. If Nelly wants to sing about anus, more power to her.

Dance Me To The End of Love ~ Leonard Cohen.

Sounds like just another love song, But the inspiration for the song was the String Quartets that was forced to play next to the crematoria in certain Nazi death camps.

think I'm misunderstanding Stooshe's Black Heart. It's big and it's black, it's the best she ever had, and she's falling for his monster....are we sure this song is about his 'heart'?
