I have not tried it on my Visa card yet. (I assume it is NFC but Visa does not use those words)

Lets hope I'm not not swiping my money away to Apple.
I often wonder if a vendor could nudge into me and pinch some money.

iPhone needed or do the rest of the world have to stick with SMS alerts?

Thats only for confirming payments because Apple think you are to stupid to actually know you've made the payment!

NFC payments have been done on mobiles now for months. The S3 was a testbed for it at the olympics with Visa.

Its all up in the air how it pans out.

Notifications surely cant be patented an that's what it is made to seem.
To be more exact it is just an IM.

Its on my card and I'd rather flash my card in front of me than my phone.

People probably prefer to nick phones.
I don't mind an IM that uses vibrate to say 'task done'.

Lets hope that is not patented.

Yep, i see what your saying but, for me its easier to pop my phone out and swipe it than going in pocket to get wallet, open it, pull card out etc etc.

You dont even have to unlock the mobile, just swipe it.

A US patent though.
Indeed.

Never used it yet

I do use NFC tags though. One where my phone goes at night which turns the phone on silent and turns the alarm on and 1 at my work that turns the phone on silent as well.

To lazy to do it myself

And no need to carry a card.

Visa has quite a monopoly in the UK add everyone is very keen to beat them.

Apple patents the patent, thus owning the entire world! (aka the USA)

Apple CEO Ming the Merciless at Apple HQ on Mongo said "Tremble before us puny Earthlings!"

Innovation is our theme, we steal it from others then sue them ha ha ha!"

Apple CEO Ming the Merciless
I think this explains why Apple doesn't allow Flash on its devices

More on Apple with 'patent result is a loss for innovation'.

http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/...for-innovation

I have heard of the 'Tooting popular front' but that is quite a new one to me.

A reference to the EFF?

They're heavily involved in keeping the web a free and open environment, they campaigned against legislation against SOPA, stuff like that.
Best way is to think of them as an online equivalent to the ACLU, actively campaigning for and defending people's rights online.

Indeed it's not new tech. The difference being is when iPhone gets it, it'll be something that gets enabled by the general public, a percentage of whom won't understand what it is and will end up charging stuff all over the place and then whining to the papers about it. Whilst the S3 has sold tons of devices, I still think it'll just be the tech savvy using stuff like NFC. When the iPhone gets it, all sorts of numpties will be offloading cash by accident!

Sounds like Apple are just trying to cover their backsides early.

It does remind you of the scene in Hitchhikers when the publishers of the guide copied text from the back of a cereal, went back in time and then sued the makers of the breakfast cereal for breach of copyright. It is ironic in that the late Douglas Adams who wrote Hitchhikers was a fan of the Apple Mac

Actually, the NFC should work through your wallet - I can verify my Barclaycard does, otherwise I would have complained that that waterslide advert was misleading I certainly don't take the card out. I guess that only works if you have ONE contactless payment card in there, though.

I often wonder if a vendor could nudge into me and pinch some mmoney
Hmmm, I hadn't ever considered that! It takes a couple of seconds to verify but I don't know if that's long enough for you to notice that the dodgy-looking vendor pressed up against your leg ISN'T just pleased to see you...

Nothing can replace good old fashioned cash
On a regular basis, I use cash in precisely two places - my work canteen and the pub. It's just an inconvenience and I'd be happy to see it completely replaced by an electronic system. I don't get paid in cash, I rarely pay for things WITH cash. Let's move forward

Sure but the patent was filed in 2009. I'm not sure there were phones with NFC in 2009?
