"Belt up you Welsh rabbit!". I'd forgotten how brilliant Hilda was - no wonder she's a (if not the) soap icon.
Also spotted a guest appearance by the sound boom at 0.25... |

Use to love Hilda hanging out the window watching when Elsie Tanner was having a ruckus with Ena out on the cobbles lololol.

... and to think that this was one of *the* main storylines at the time!
(this was building up to the revelation that Betty was Gordon Clegg's mother - Vera and Granny Hopkins had found his birth certificate in the sideboard) |

I never liked Granny Hopkins - sour, avaricious old bat who had very few (if any) saving graces. She always seemed to be enjoying other people's misery. Certainly not as memorable or likeable as some of the other battleaxes. No offence to the actress, mind...
For the exact reasons that you've said, it never worked. She was downright nasty, evil and vindictive. She had none of the warmth that Ena had. |

She was horrid. They tried to make her into Ena Sharples (Even down to giving her a similar coat and pairing her up with Minnie Caldwell) as Violet Carson had been away ill for a long time.

Granny being the new Ena is one of those things that keeps being repeated and there might be some truth to it but I can only think of one scene she had with Minnie. She didn't have Ena's warmth, but she wasn't meant to. |

I actually quite like Granny, she was easily the standout character from the Hopkins family. By 1974 the street had become a cozy place where everyone liked each other, even Ena had softened. Granny's nastiness was interesting to watch as it isolated her from her family.

I agree that the Street was too cosy by 1974, but I don't think that Granny Hopkins was brought in to counter that. The Hopkins family were a vehicle for Kathy Jones and part of me tends to think that not all that much effort was put into them as a family let alone as individual characters. Kathy Staff was forever dipping in and out as Vera (she'd just started in Last of the Summer Wine as Nora Batty) and Idriss worked nightshifts so he was barely seen (though his moans about getting little sleep could give Paul the fireman a run for his money).
I think that there's a lot of truth to Granny 'being the new Ena', though mainly through default than intent. Nobody is as miserable as Paul the fireman though! |

There are some great lines in that clip.
Ray: "You never was able to talk the Queen's English was you, 'Ilda?" Bet: "No, she just shouts it at the top of 'er flamin' voice - she were an air raid siren in t'war." ![]() Mrs. Walker gets plus points too for the dignified manner in which she bollocked Bet. Verbally speaking, of course. |
