Hi

A long shot this I know, but 20 odd years ago my mate was telling me about this story in a comic, which was really good..and I want to remember what it was and what the character was. Problem is I barely remember the details But I know the premise..it went something like this:

Two characters were fighting and metamorphising into bigger and better creatures, each out-doing the other one. One would say something like (not actually these creature though) 'I am the mountain eagle, lord of the skies and I rend you with my talons..' the other then metamorphisises into something bigger 'I am the dragon, lord of the heavens...'' and so on. I think one of them turns into the sun and burns the other, the other responds 'I am a black hole, devourer of stars and planets...' The reader is then under the impression that nothing can out do this ..but then the other says something like...'and I am Man...for there is always hope (of escape)'. To labour the point, if there is always hope, then they cannot be beaten.

I have absolutely ruined that story lol, it was really well written and it was really powerful when I read it. However the years have gone by and drinks have been drunk and that is all I remember! Any help much appreciated!

Cheers

It's issue #4 'Sandman' from Neil Gaiman's peerless reign. It can be found in the collected edition 'Preludes & Nocturns'. Dream is battling Lucifer.

I thought about Sandman: A Hope in Hell but some of the details are different and I began to wonder if another comic had done something similar...

But, as the O/P says, the examples he uses aren't the actual ones... the final play in Sandman is simply "I am hope". It's a duel in hell between Dream and Choronozon over Dream's Mask of Office.

Yup, definitely Sandman #4. Somewhat infamous comic book scene.
