Sean moves down in my estimation...
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/article/ds17464.html
Saying that you only have to play yourself is perhaps the most ignorant and stupid thing an "actor" can say. Sean and Antony Cotton have both gone way down in my estimation which is a massive shame. |

have to agree - it implies that being an actor is easy, and requires little or no talent whatsoever.
as a trainee actor, i can assure others who agree with Antony Cotton that acting is by NO means easy and requires a lot of skill and patience too many people think that acting is just "pretending" and that anybody can do it - wait for the admissions to acting schools shoot up! |

To be fair I think that most soap actors actually play themselves. Most properly and highly trained actors don't want to appear in soap operas. In my opinion, poorly/non trained and 10 a penny stage school actors are the best we are ever going to get.

My computer chose at that moment to crash and messed everything up. Sorry.

There are the occassional exceptions who really are very talented - but real talent is no prerequisite for successfully playing a good soap role! |

no but hes only talking about himself. He is probably playing himself, besides the role on paper is hardly multi faceted. Corrie is not a show that takes time to explore the characters of supporting players.

To be fair I read that as him saying there are elements of himself in Sean, which is true enough and fairly obvious, not that he was just playing himself.

My interpretation of his interview was that he saw some likeness of himself in his character, which is true and plainly obvious. If he said "Oh I'm nothing like Sean" we'd all be calling him a liar.

I find him quite funny. He's not up himself, he just speaks his mind, he's candid! Its hilarious talking about Corrie as camp, and not as serious real drama (as many Corrie stars have said). He's right!!! Norris, Bet, lol, etc!!! So right!!

I think most people who have seen Anthony Cotton and in other shows, know that he's practically playing himself in many ways. But yes, so are a lot of people. Doesn't make them bad actors. Although I don't think Sean is a good actor apart from with the comedy, there are plenty of actors who are kind of being themselves, but when called upon can do comedy and big dramatic scenes etc extremely well and this is what counts.
Suranne Jones isn't a million miles away from her character, yet she's an outstanding actress who can do any emotion and acting style. |

She's good at playing Karen McDonald but I can't wait to see what she appears in after Corrie, can you really imagine her being convincing as a nurse, a lawyer etc etc? I think Suranne Jones has got a few ideas above her station. |

I think it was Pam St Clement (or one of the other veterans) who said that nowadays soap actors inevitably 'play themselves' to some extent because there is no rehearsal time and such a heavy workload. There are a few exceptions, but mostly they are recruited on that basis. I don't think Antony C was saying it wasn't hard work, just that he wasn't going go all lovey by saying it's so exhausting creatively dahling. He's just being down to earth about it, good for him. |

there are a rack of soap stars I think are dreadfully overrated. Suranne, Kate Ford, Jessie Wallace to name a few.

What's better....Someone who naturally talks in a camp fashion or someone pretending to talk camp. I go for the natural every time.

How can you say that Sean has gone down in your estimation? He's a fantastic character and there can be no one better suited to play Sean than Anthony Cotton if he is like the character. The scenes are bound to be more realistic if he can relate to them better.

As far as I'm concerned he has soon proved that he does more than that and I find it a bit of an embarassment to both himself and Coronation Street to turn round and say something like that. |

His character may well be like himself but that is why he plays it so well and is convincing. Shane Richie is another example of this and he plays Alfie great! I really don't see the problem. He knows he will never be some sought after actor which many soap stars think they will be once leaving the show and is honesty is refreshing imo. |

I know what you mean Jumpy - but I felt the same about Sarah Lancashire, I couldn't see her as anyone but Raquel. But she has been very successful in other roles since, because she's a very good actress, so there is a chance Suranne can do the same - although I hope not as I want her back as Karen!
