Surface tablets are a MS Product - the article refers to Windows RT tablets made by Dell and HP, in that they are going to concentrate on the full Windows 8 tablets - not really surprising. Windows RT tablets are going to be aimed at the consumer market and both those companies are going to be aiming for the higher margin business market.

Surface RT would have been a less rushed headline..
Low margins maybe makes Hp and others wonder how much and how long Microsoft would commit to licensing.

Paul is correct. Microsoft Surface is the range of tablets that Microsoft will be releasing. The Samsung TV you are referring to uses Microsoft Pixelsense, which used to be called Surface but has since been rebranded.

Surface now only applies to Microsoft's own tablet range. A non-microsoft tablet running the arm-based version of WIndows 8 is WIndows RT.

EDIT: Theres no such thing as the Sony Surface. If you are referring to the Duo, that will run a full version of WIndows 8 so isn't even Windows RT

Microsoft made a multi-touch "coffee table computer", note NOT a TV. This was called Microsoft Surface. They later made a second generation of this 'coffee table computer' in collaboration with Samsung called the Samsung SUR40.

This line of coffee table computers was rebranded PixelSense.

The brand name Surface was recycled for use on the tablets that Microsoft itself has designed and made. It is, so far, exclusively for the use of two tablet products made by Microsoft - the ARM-based Surface and the x86-based Surface Pro.

Windows RT is the name of the operating system that Microsoft made for ARM-based tablets to run. Windows 8 is the name of the operating system that Microsoft made for x86-based devices to run.

It's really annoying when a headline doesn't even come close to reflecting the facts. Its even worse when the OP doesn't seem to even realise what a load of rubbish they have written.

It looks like those Intel based convertibles might be more attractive than tablets anyway. People will always need laptops and if you can use it as a tablet too and it has a reasonable battery life, it may even threaten tablets. Toshiba one looks nice. I was saving myself for Suface pro, but with the choice, I may try something else.

Nope the Surfaces ARE tablets, they are not convertibles or hybrids. They come with COVERS that double up as keyboards but these still don't make it into a notebook, these just make it into a tablet with a nice keyboard attached.

I suspect they mean you can connect the Surface device, i.e., Windows RT or Windows 8 pro convertible to a TV via HDMI and that they are not talking about some obscure technology almost nobody remembers now.
