With e-readers can you take say stories from fanfics sites, and put them on the e-reader.

Yes, you may need to convert them to a format recognised by a particular reader first, but that's trivial. And there's a chance a reader can use a file without any conversion. Though Kindle is quite picky what it will work with. Epub readers can work directly with more formats, but not with all either. The best programme for format converting is Calibre and it is for free, too.

As long as the books don't have DRM on them it's pretty easy.

Download calibre. It's free and can be used to covert ebooks into different formats. If the ebooks you want are already in a compatible format you won't have to do any coversions. Bascially as long as they are not in mobi format you could probably put them straight onto the kobo.

On the Kobo Vox, what you do once you have the book on your PC is to get it into Calibre.

Then plug the Kobo into the pc and get calibre to send it to the device. Once it has apparently done that (it seems to give no visible indication that it has done anything) unplug the Kobo.

Then, using the kobo and with the library open, choose the menu button and select import. If the menu does not contain Import, you are not in the library.

The book will be then readable.

One of the things you will notice during this process is that the Kobo messages seem to think that you have the book on an SD card which it offers the option to delete. I think that what happens is that Caliber puts the book into a holding area and the Kobo Import copies into the correct place in the Kobo for ereading.

If you don't choose to delete it, that boook will be read in over and over again every time you get a new book, and in the end the hilding area will be full so you will have to delete them.

The wife and I both have Kobo's, buy an SD (wireless) or micro sd card (touch) to fit, about £3-£4 for an 8gb, then all you have to do is drag and drop epub files straight on the card or via Calibre if you have to convert. I never plug my Kobo into the computer, just the cards, I also use a mains/usb adaptor to charge. If the machine is working, leave best alone, I do not update at all.

I'd say it's easier to connect with USB cable than keep moving that micro SD, it can be quite fiddly. Anyway, I checked one of those Harry Potter fantasies and it says in keywords: dark, abuse, rape, not quite what I remember from the books As for downloading it, you go into a particular chapter and you can download it or the whole story as Word or Epub. Epub can be read by Kobo without any conversion. With a bit of luck if the reader has a web browser you may even be able to download it directly to the reader.

I checked out the site too. It's nothing to do with the original books - it's basically a porn site.

one very good thing about Calibre is you don't have to convert the books yourself. If your device is recognised in Calibre you can add any books to your Calibre library and then just click on it and click send to device and Calibre will do the conversion automatically for you

They're not all about rape and sexual nature, and I said they are fanfics (aka written by other people).
