Nexus 7 Apps - share your recommendations!
njp
02-09-2012
I'm guessing that there might be quite a few people here for whom, like me, the Google Nexus 7 is their first foray into both Android and tablets, and are wondering what apps to install and how best to use up their £15 Google play credit. So this thread is for us to share recommendations for apps that really stand out, as well as to ask for recommendations from others.

Using my vast experience of several days use of the tablet (and I love the damn thing!), here's my list of stand-out apps so far:

Free Apps:

BBC news - Very slick alternative to using the web browser.

IMDb - As above.

Glowball - absolutely no use for anything, but it looks pretty (making full use of the Tegra 3 graphics capability) and everyone should try it!

Tunein Radio - very nice internet radio app. It has also made me rediscover podcasts, since they are now so easy to find. There's a "pro" version for a massive 69p which lets you record. I'll probably upgrade just to thank them for the app.

TED - Access to lots of talks about lots of subjects.

Paid for Apps:

ProjectM - this is great. It's a visualisation app that works with the music player or the microphone input, and also lets you manipulate the visualisations (of which there are many) using the touch screen. Well worth £1.89 out of your google play credit!

World of Goo - I'm not much of a gamer, but this is quite nice to have. There's a free version to try it out which would probably have met my gaming needs, but I impulsively spent £2.99 out of my credit on the full version.

Apps I want but have yet to find anything adequate:

I'd like a decent Freeview TV listings app. The nearest I've found is TV Guide from TVGuide.co.uk, but it is frustratingly flawed. With a few tweaks, it would be just what I want.

Any suggestions for something better gratefully received! For a good enough app, I'd even pay a modest subscription so that I can finally wean myself off paper listings!

Free: Gmote....stream any media content over WiFi from computer to Nexus....invaluable for me and saves time so I can watch things around the house without having to drag and drop....

Paid: FPse.....invaluable for any Playstation fan imo, it's a great emulator that plays PS1 roms, plus it looks great when you select the OpenGL option, one of my best buys on the Play Store ever.

(All apps free, except where stated)

The Amazon Store App - which has a free app of the day every day. Not always all that great, but they're pay apps given away, so if you get something that you end up liking at some point, you can't really complain.

Podkicker - Google's 'Listen' app is getting shuttered so people will have to find alternatives. There may be better out there, if there are, let me know!

Star Chart (pay) - shows the planets and stars in a real-time 360 degree sphere. Hold it up to the sky to help identify what you're seeing.

Nasa app - bit clunky, but has regular news, updates, images and videos.

MX Player - solid, basic video player; has issues on certain MKV files (see below).

VPlayer (with 7 day free trial) - video player which also plays MKV with AC3 audio - something no other video player does that I've found.

GPS Test - shows GPS data, sattelites, direction, elevation etc.

Wifi Analyzer - shows wifi data; channels, strength, wifi signals, etc.

Camera Launcher for Nexus 7 - opens the camera for still images and video

ES File Explorer - access to LAN and local folders, also has many utilities like zip extracter, text reader, etc

Ghost Commander - simple, effective LAN explorer - two window mode for copying.

Nexus Media Importer (pay, but there's an image-only version that's free so you can test to see if it works with your devices) - access video, images, files on a USB stick connected with a USB On The Go cable WITHOUT root. You can read from, but not write to the external drive.

Riptide GP (pay) - water-based racing game that shows of the Nexus 7's tegra graphics. Pretty good.

TrackID - Sony's free music ID app. Works well.

Dolphin Browser - good for pretendig to be an iPhone/iPad as well as havign a lot of plugins.

Ultimate Rotation Control (free trial) - For the Nexus 7, allows you to rotate the desktop WITHOUT root.

Comics (app free- most comics paid) - or the Marvel/ DC ones, same thing. Comics look great on the nexus.

Google Currents (free) - Much better looking than on a phone.

Nova Launcher (basic free) - rotate the launcher, plus loads of other stuff. I use Go-Launcher on the phone, but prefer Nova on the N7

Zen Pinball THD (1 free table, extra are paid) - Fab looking pinball game with good ball physics for a change.

FloatNSplit tablet keyboard (paid)- The standard keyboard is a bit naff, this was the best of the ones I tried, had previously bought swiftx for the phone, only to discover its a different app for tablets, and it doesn't work as well as this one.

Firefox Beta (free) - you pretty much need this (+flash) if you want to view any browser based flash content.

I used to have the TrackID app from Sony on an old Sony phone but im finding the free SoundHound app to be far better.
I also use the Last FM app for scrobbing mmy music to my Last FM page and at times i use the Pure Lounge app.
