Rihanna was a surprise guest at Coldplay's show at the Stade de France and performed Princess of China with the band and then came back on, during the encore, for a performance of Umbrella with Chris Martin at the piano.

I'm genuinely shocked at how good Rihanna's vocals are in this!

I was shocked as well. She hasn't sang like that in a very long time. maybe this is a sign of more to come?

Wow that was amazing. This time she wanted to sing rather than 95% of the time when she yodels. If she keeps this up I will be come a fan of hers.

i think its the arrangement of the song that highlights her vocals particularly on this version and it helps that she is standing still too. i accept that she is inconsistent at best, but she does get a lot of criticism for her live vocals.

The audience seems to enjoy it. That's what counts, not the opinion of some crumlbe old farts in front of a keyboard at home.

Absolutely love this. I'm glad she performed this, most people dismiss her as having no vocal talent.

I know she isn't as good as Beyonce/Christina Aguilera/Leona Lewis but she can definitely sing/put emotion into her vocals. Although I agree she is inconsistent with her performances.

Through hard work and perseverance she has become a competent vocalist. She's not outstanding, but at least she CAN sing...she has known she had issues with live vocals for a while and has been having lessons and coaching to improve and it has worked wonders. Certain other popstars should take note.

yeah, i agree and like i said she can be inconsistent. i think she is better than many give her credit for and at least she does perform live most of the time.

she is a true popstar - she needs to stop releasing songs as fast as she does so her vocals can be rested and properly prepared for more performances of newer material

This was good, but she still needs a vocal coach. Rihanna probably has the worst vocals out of mainstream popstars today.

She sounds great on this and the arrangement is wonderful! I saw Rihanna during LOUD Tour and I will defend her against anyone who says she's a crap live singer or performer. Her show was amazing.

She has sung well alot of times but people always write her off, ill admit theres a few times in her concerts were she is off key but that is when she has been singing and dancing for hours! She never mimes either like a certain spears does!

Rihanna can sing better live than people give her credit for. She has her ups and downs but I overall find her to be pretty consistent, this stripped back acoustic version was great, she should do more acoustic sessions some time! Like other posters have said Rihanna's vocals are naturally weaker after she's been dancing for a while or there's a high choreography routine, I suppose she doesn't naturally have much of a vocal stamina that other artists have. But yeah, overall she's better than a lot of people in the industry but miles from the best!

I always forget about her. She is completely irrelevant in the US. I don't know anyone who knows who she is.

ROFL!!

Like others have said many have dismissed her vocal talents. She is talented but she's not consistent. Although I do think the majority of the time her vocals ARE above average but there's no denying when she goes for it vocally, she goes hard and is amazing. IMO she can be great vocally she just can't dance and be great vocally as she begins to sound tired and out of breath. Credit where credits due though i've never once seen or heard of her ever mime.

I'm not sure what was more painful, the vocals or the half-assed dancing.

Yet you can bet that in six months time Chris Martin will be on the radio moaning about the bigger bands not taking his teeny bopping parade seriously... Coldplay will forever be chasing the shadows of Pink Floyd, U2, Oasis, The Who etc.

LOL at Oasis. As if they were any less corporate or had more artistic integrity than Coldplay ever had.

Hold on,isn't this something you're supposed to learn before you actually become successful?

Oasis didn't get up on stage with Rihanna or turn up for X Factor. The only corporate sellout in it all was Alan McGee.

I would have thought so, but apparently not. But either way I think she's earning back her success now....she's a far better performer than she used to be, both vocally and otherwise.

I've heard some Pink Floyd tribute bands are better than the original.
