If I lived close to port Isaac, I'd like to open a shop in the spring. Maybe I'd sell hobo purses, and cute cardigans.
And maybe Shop girl would come down and join me. Cause she knows practically All the filming locations. Or anyone else who wanted to come. And we could open a DM tour business together. We'd have a small bus with big windows (not a van like Bert's!)
I'm there! Love the idea of the tour business. And we could sell bird shaped pasties. They'd fly off the shelf!

Oh - and a couple new discoveries. I confirmed that the interior scenes at the concert (intermission where Martin insults AJ's friend who made the food) were filmed at Pencarrow House where the exteriors were filmed. And I think I have found the path where Martin takes Louisa's hand and then an estimate where the trees are for the kiss.

I also determined that the red bedroom is NOT in White Rose Cottage! There is a possibility that it is in the cottage next door (toward the school) but I have to look into that more closely. I was looking at a screenshot when Martin & Louisa are getting the bed ready for Holly and the view out the window is absolutely not the view we would see from that little window we look at to start the episode we are re-watching this week. I have also looked at the back of the cottage and it's not possible it is there either.

I thought they shop the interiors in the barn. So they wouldn't necessarily bother getting the right view out the window would they?

Such a pity!
S1E3 Doc Martin France
Doc goes to the pool in his SPEEDOS to get the kids out of the pool.

What a pity this didn't happen in the english version!

LG's equivalent screamed at the kids in the classroom. Nothing like LG's control of the kids.

DM's equivalent is giving the dog water and the dog is allowed to sleep IN his house ON the couch!!!

Biff and rewatched the S3E5 episode with Holly. I'm not sure who wrote a comment before, but when LG says he is an amazing man as he is leaving her bungalow, DM absolutely says "No, I'm not". I think someone else thought he said something else, but it's very clear that this is what he says.

Also, we looked up "Lord Muck", Mrs. Lamb's little snide remark about DM, and learned it is "Informal an ordinary man behaving or being treated as if he were aristocratic". You know, for Mrs. Lamb being so stupid, she really did peg DM's presentation in the village in a very astute manner.
The other comment that I loved that was along those lines is Bert telling Al about his cough that "I guess I better go see the surgeon-general."

DM's original act or problem that he needs to be rescued from is his subconscious reaction to blood. That is the premise for the show. Without that happening to him he wouldn't have moved from London and he would be ok in his own little world. But the act (reaction) necessitated a call to action on his part a movement out of his own little world.
That I get, that I agree with. I just did not agree with redemption. I do not see his blood phobia a reaction to be redeemed from. However I do agree with the process of his being resurrected as in the hero's journey paper that was previously cited. I just could not come up with that word when trying to make my original point and argue against the claptrack of that quasi-religious blogger.

Oh damn, got back on that stupid soapbox!!!

As far as I have ever read, they only shoot the interiors of the first floor of the surgery there. In one article there was mention of the surgery bedroom there too, but we have seen several versions of a bedroom so I'm not sure about it.

In one of the behind the scenes videos, there was a shot of the police station that was used in S2. That surprised me because I don't imagine there is that much room in that barn for a lot of sets, especially since most of the locations change from series to series. Oh, I also remember the person who visited the sets in S5 mentioned a set for the chemist, but that also surprised me because it is very obvious that most of the scenes that we saw in S5 really looked like they were set in the building there in the center of town. I say that because often the door is open and you can see activity on the street - and also we saw lots of fan photos of scenes being shot inside.

I can't imagine that they would go to the expense of constructing sets that wouldn't be used for more than one year, so the surgery rooms make the most sense. I was surprised to see the set for the police station here because they have had a different location for it on all 5 series. Perhaps the location they found that year allowed them to paint the blue on the exterior but didn't have the interior available. There were several interior scenes shot there that year with his sister being there, Caroline arrested and having blood drawn, Julie visiting a couple of times.

I suspect that some of the sets that they use in cottages or businesses in town may be shot out of order so that they not have to lease out the building for the entire summer. For instance, when they use the chemist, they have to turn the interior and the exterior from a gift shop to a chemist. I can't imagine that they have to do that several times over the summer (especially with the disruption to the business), but maybe they lease the business for a week and shoot scenes from several different episodes all at once? Just my speculation, but maybe someone who has been there knows?

But getting back to the red bedroom, I have looked a little more closely and I really do believe I was shot in the cottage next door. White Rose Cottage is actually called Sea Cove Cottage. The pictures online of the first floor all match exactly, but the pictures and descriptions of the two bedrooms and bathroom on the second floor make it impossible for the red bedroom and the bathroom pictured in the "bra" scene to be located in that cottage. More on that when I post S3 locations . I will be finishing posting more stuff today and will let you know.

Thanks for this -- I thought it was so apt that it deserved a link: http://www.thewritersjourney.com/hero%27s_journey.htm

And there is also this, for you reading pleasure: http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DocMartin
Really enjoyed the TVtropes.org article, NewPark. Thanks for giving us that link. It's nice (and funny!) to see someone get the flavor and story of the show correct and mix in tropes while doing so.

Maybe one of our Brit friends can confirm, but I think this is a fairly common term there. I am sure I have heard characters from Coronation Street use the term "Lady Muck" several times over the years and some of the characters from that show would be very similar to Dawn.

In fact, the actress who plays Dawn played a hairdresser named Denise Osbourne on Corrie for about 5 years. She had a baby with the lead character in the soap so she came back for a short time about 5 years ago. She always had that same hairstyle (red with the white stripe) when she was a regular 20 years ago and then when she returned 5 yerars ago. I googled her and it looks like she still has the same coloring, so I suspect at least the white across the front is natural - I actually have had the same natural white streak around my face for years. Not so sure about that red though!

If they have DM show up in his Speedos, then it is an entirely different character and they're clueless as to the subtle depths of the character. I'm so glad we have the original. So far, no copycat seems to have actually got it right at all.

I was looking back at your kitchen photos yesterday and was struck by the thought that the kitchen in S1 seemed much more polished than later seasons. It was more the kitchen that might be expected for ME. I recall the comment by the first patient in the first episode - she comments on what he has done (and what Jim Sims would think of it) but she also makes some comment about why he did not remodel.

Is Sea Cove between White Rose and the Oakwood cottage?

As far as the kitchen, I think they used a kitchen somewhere in Port Isaac the first year. Then they constructed the kitchen and living room for S2. They did a pretty good job of duplicating the S1 kitchen but I point out the differences in those photos.

Sea Cove IS White Rose Cottage. If you search White Rose Cottage in Port Isaac there is one in town called that - but it is not the one we know. The cottage that I believe contains the red bedroom is the one going the other way from the Oakwoods. Looking at the door from the street it would be on the left.

Death in Paradise / DCI Banks
Our local PBS station is just starting to run the series Death in Paradise with Ben Miller, Stewart the park ranger from DM. I was very disappointed. It was so formulaic.

A detective inspector is transferred from the Met in London to the island of Saint-Marie in the Caribbean; unfortunately, he dislikes sun, sea and sand. (sound familiar?)

They are also starting to run DCI Banks and it looks like it could be good. Not Prime Suspect, of course, but watchable. There are, I think 2 seasons before Caroline Catz joined the cast.

OK, gotcha. I thought that my eyesight was really bad and was hiding something from me as I could not pick out an additional cottage between LG and the Oakwoods.

Inauguration
Just an aside - I am watching our US inaguration this morning. There was an amazing rendition of Glory, Glory, Hallelujah by a gospel chior and then James Taylor got up with no other accompaniment than his acoustic guitar and sang America the Beautiful. WOW

Because I have a day off and could use it very productively to get a lot of work done, I am instead spending a lot of time on that tvtropes.org website.

I keep choosing the "random" link (as I haven't really figured out the site otherwise), and am reading about a million different tropes, all with their own unique and at times ambiguous nuances, and it's all quite fascinating.

I think about the fanfic characters I've focused on and created and how they fit into the different tropes. This is a wonderfully lucid, articulate, entertaining and educational website cateogorizing the immensity of different story journeys and character personalities. Super interesting.

If you have work to do, read this website instead!

Can you imagine what the quasi-religious blogger would do with the idea of "resurrected" applied to anything but the bible?

Can you imagine what that blogger is going to do when he gets to s5e1 where they drop Joan's casket, DM delivers his eulogy and JP answers his phone during the service!

Someone said the German version was an exact copy but because they didnt "get" the jokes they imitated things the actors did (like wiping their nose) which wasn't part of the joke at all.

The French version boarders on farce. The majors wife (who is the headmistress in the French version and an ongoing character of course but didnt learn anything from the man-boobs incident which i like to think our majors wife did) is a sex starved nymphomaniac. Al and Mark are complete bumbling idiots. MrsT hasn't got the subtleness of our MrsT who genuinely likes DM. LG doesn't like DM she seems to bait him. LG wasn't like that in s1. Elaine isn't anywhere near as annoying. Lucy Punch played the part really well even though I hated the character.

In fact the acting in the French version is pretty terrible I am sorry to say.
