Had email today from Humax stating they anticipate the launch date for the HDR-1000S to be the 8th October,but this has to be confirmed. The delay in the launch,according to Humax,is Freesat confirming final details prior to release.

I'd like to know this too. It'd be handy to plug in a usb stick and play mkv's mp4 etc via the Humax box.
I'll also be interested to hear how Free Time measures up. I expect iPlayer will now have an HD option, ITV Player as usual wont, but what about 4od and Demand5?
Got to say that the EPG just looks gorgeous. I'll be following this box closely.
Goodness me that's an revolting looking box - a big dollop of gloopy shiny plastic (IMHO).
I've been holding off buying a Foxsat HDR for a long time, knowing it would have to be replaced by a new model eventually... but if only they'd replaced it with something even slightly stylish.
Maybe it looks better in the flesh though- if not I can't see any casual buyers choosing that in a shop - it's the sort of look you'd expect from a £20 DVD player in Asda.
Anyway, I'll be interested to hear from early adopters about the fan noise - does the fan run continuously even when on standby, only when it's switched on, or only very infrequently?
The external power supply is a bit of a worry - I'd always heard that those little plastic transformers are more likely to catch fire than something in a metal case. I hope it's something reasonably weighty and preferably with a separate mains plug on a lead, rather than an integrated plug.
Also a shame that the DLNA server aspect doesn't work (at the moment)... how long before Humax get that working I wonder....

With the heat generating power supply outside the box maybe it doesn't need a fan or if it does then a quiet low speed one may be fitted.

Pvrs don't encode anything, they simply copy the digital data is is from the broadcast direct to the hdd. They don't work like DVD recorders. Replay is thus 100% identical to the original recording.
They decode on replay so have mpeg decoders but no mpeg encoding, they don't need it.
SD is mpeg2 encoded, HD is H264/AVC (AVCHD) a variant of mpeg4. Why huge
HD is around 5GB or so for an hours recording.

It's small compared to even DVD, 5GB is about 2.5 hrs. If you made them smaller the quality would suffer.
HD broadcasters use the most bit efficient encoders that are available, if they could make the files smaller without seriously comprimising quality they would (unless you are Channel 5 and don't give a damn about crap pictures)
A SD DV camcorder from a year or two ago needs 4GB to store just 20 mins of footage, A 2.5hr movie in 1920 x 1080 24p as you get on a blu-ray uses about 35GB.
Modern HDD now used in newer pvrs typically store 500GB or 1000GB (1TB) with many installing 2000 or 3000 GB drives.

I guess this is the compromise with taking a live stream of data; rather than being able to take longer transcoding to a smaller file size, if time was less critical.

Not really, DVD recorders do it all the time even back then. The reason was that DV compression is intraframe. Unlike mpeg every frame is preserved without loss. This has major advantages for picture quality and frame accurate editing. Being tape based storage wasn't an issue.
DVD based camcorders were around at the time, the pictures were pretty awfull.

Could be close. If anyone remembers The Foxsat-hdr had an OTA on the air at launch in late 2008. Presumably it takes a while to ship from S Korea, so there will be quite a bit of time to continue software development. Interesting to keep an eye on the DTG ota website.

John Lewis website has changed from launching on October 8th to now launching on October 19th. So another delay, that ship is taking a long time to come from China or wherever Humax get their boxes manufactured. I seem to remember similar delays when the first generation boxes came out and when they did hit the shops, they were as scarce as hens teeth, as most shops didn't have enough stock in the early weeks of release.

This is all getting a bit frustrating. According to Humax Direct they have stock of the HDR-1000S,but Freesat is holding up the launch due to problems their end. I have one on pre-order with Humax,and wish these problems could get sorted as my Sky HD box sub runs out next Tuesday!

I'm interested to know your source of information,as Humax have said to me on two separate occasions that they do have stock in this country.

I doubt that - If a product is still in the far east it could not launch in your timescales - have you ever booked a ship for a container, I have. I believe Humax's expectations.

Yes it can, they will simply fly initial stock in. I've assisted with this process for another manufacturer and my brother co-runs a cargo/freight company! Transportation via ship, yep, much longer but I didn't say ship

Of course they could (in small volumes) I doubt this is what they have in mind (costs considered). The important thing is will they meet their current dates, I think so. We will see.

They could certainly bring a few pallets worth in, maybe a total of 500 to 1000 units and if under pressure from Freesat to launch, they might just swallow the cost; they and others have done so in the past.
Still believe we are 3 weeks away, so late October.
