It's small compared to even DVD, 5GB is about 2.5 hrs. If you made them smaller the quality would suffer.
HD broadcasters use the most bit efficient encoders that are available, if they could make the files smaller without seriously comprimising quality they would (unless you are Channel 5 and don't give a damn about crap pictures)
A SD DV camcorder from a year or two ago needs 4GB to store just 20 mins of footage, A 2.5hr movie in 1920 x 1080 24p as you get on a blu-ray uses about 35GB.
Modern HDD now used in newer pvrs typically store 500GB or 1000GB (1TB) with many installing 2000 or 3000 GB drives.
