Was 2007 one of EE's strongest years?

All I see is praise about this year on this forum. To be fair it was brilliant:

Stax, Stella/Ben, Mad May, the Cindy Beale stalker, Chelsea and Deano framing Sean for Patricks attack, the Vic Raid, Ronnie and Roxy's arrival....all IMO were brilliant

Thing is, the cast of EE 2007 wasn't particularly strong and most of the central characters were very new but it was still a great year it goes to show that EE don't need a strong cast to produce good material

It was Santer at his best....it was only from January 2008 onwards when he went downhill

Yes I kind of agree. However it wasn't till around the arrival of Ronnie and Roxy things really kicked in. The show had real direction then. Everything happened for a reason.

The character interaction was fantastic and I even loved the sub stories, I remember Mickey Miller fancying Shabnam and it made for funny TV. Just the little things.

You've missed out the best story however, the Ian Beale stalker story, was one of the best EastEnders stories ever. That episode when Jane was shot, with the drama at the hospital and Ian unable to shake of Stephen and having to get him sectioned as Pat looked after Peter and Bobby and told them the story of the wizard of oz. Fantastic TV. Laurie Brett, Adam Woodyatt and Pam St Clement at their best, and most natural.

I remember a scene the following episode when Ian returns home having been kidnapped and Denise sees Ian in the hallway being reunited with his boys and all she can say is "Oh Ian" reminded me of her reaction to his return from his breakdown.

In my opinion it was one of the weakest years. Ratings hit an all time low of 3.9 million, storylines like Patricks attack, Mad May kidnapping Dawn and the Mitchell/Beale car crash were pretty awful. The year did end very well though with the Christmas episodes and a lot of strong characters were introduced from summer onwards. I think the show took a long time to recover after all the departures of well established characters at the end of 2005, the show just lost its spark and didn't seem to be gripping again until the Ronnie/Danielle/Archie stuff happened in 2008/2009...

The Ronnie/Danielle plot is one of the most overhyped unintelligent unemotional crap I've ever seen on EE.

Plots like Stella, Steven/Ian and Max/Stacey we're a hell of a lot more interesting and had way much more depth. The Patrick story was fantastic. It brought in different strands and characters and it just worked perfectly.

The 3.9m figure was in July 2006.

EE was the most watched show of the year in 2007 when 14m tuned in for the Stax reveal.

Sorry my mistake. It was around 4 million though, I think it may have been the crash episode when it was up against Emmerdale in May 2007. The Stax reveal was good though, definitely the highlight of Christmas TV that year

Yeah, one episode in 2007 had 4m. Hardly speaks for the whole year.

The ratings for 06/07 were usually 8-9m, hitting the 35-42/43% bracket usually.

To answer the OP: the second half of the year was quite good but it felt nothing like classic EastEnders, which unfortunately was lost after Chrstmas 2005. Had those storylines been carried out now they would probably be considered very poor...it was the exceptional storyline pacing that made those storylines good.

But it was a good period and I liked it. Last time I really wanted to watch the show tbh.

The 4m figure was for an episode that was up against the climax of Emmerdale's "Who Killed Tom King?" plot, back in the days when Emmerdale was able to comfortably reach the 8m mark.

I wasn't speaking for the whole year. Agreed about the feel of classic Eastenders ending at the end of 2005. I thought the first half of 2005 was pretty bad but then when Phil and Grant came back and everything kicked off with Chrissie, it was gripping. I think 2006 could have been a great year for the show if so many high profile characters hadn't left at the end of 2005.

The first half of 2007 was terrible. But around June there was suddenly a HUGE improvement, and it was just brilliant for the rest of the year.

It's a sad fact that 2007 was probably the last consistently strong period for EastEnders.

All that stuff with Joe Macer being revealed as Paulines murderer in early 2007, then falling out a window and dying, then the day after it was like nothing had even happened. Quite possibly the worst start to any Eastenders year. It did get a lot better though with the Stella plot and Max and Staceys affair reveal.

Yes completely agree, Pauline's exit was dreadful. I think EastEnders really hit rock bottom in early 2007 (after a poor 2006); there was an episode around March 07 involving a darts game between Mo and Charlie and it was honestly the worst episode I have ever seen!

But the conclusion to the Mad May storyline in June was utterly gripping, and for me that really was the turning point - EastEnders just went from strength to strength in the following months (Stella's death, Ronnie & Roxy's arrival, Patrick's attack, Ian's stalker, the raid on the Vic, Stax revealed).
