Big day today for nokia. literally might make or break them.

Apparently they will be announcing the Lumia 920 Windows Phone 8
http://www.theverge.com/2012/9/3/328...amera-pureview
4.5" display
32GB storage
Qi wireless charging
8MP 'pureview' camera
1.5GHz Dual Core

I might just buy one.

I'm only slightly excited about the announcement of today's Nokia phones given Nokia stated the real stuff is coming q2 next year, but I am VERY interested in learning more about WP8.

today is important for nokia.

i'm interested because i need a new phone. could wait to Q2 next year but it will probably be Q3. as in a year away.

i do hope it goes well. the phone looks nice.

as for WP8. i don't really know enough about WP7 to be able to note any improvements. but it would be good to see another contender in the market.

I am keen for Nokia to survive, they bring valuable innovation to the marketplace.

Sadly, I think they are going to fail despite the merits of their products. The market seems to like the tide of a sea and it's very difficult to change hype in the marketplace and it's not always logical either.

I will be keeping a beady eye on todays developments.
I hope Nokia do well with their new phones I like them as a company. I havent experienced a Windows phone myself but everyone and their dog has either a samsung or an iphone , so surely an alternative is to be embraced ?

Facepalm for Nokia revealing Pureview Lumia 920 when the Pureview is 8MP and not the real deal, especially if their best phones won't be out till next year. Can't see this selling well at all. I've been reading some of Damian Dinning's tweets and even he doesn't seem all that happy about it imo.

A lot of people, for some reason, thought the Lumia Pureview phone would be 21MP.

Nokia "business as usual" since Elop joined them as CEO. Always talking about the next product, and not the ones available now.

They killed their Symbian business over a year before WP7 phones were available, killed WP7 business by announcing they wouldn't be upgraded to Win8, and now they launch Win8 by telling everyone to wait a year for the "real" phones!

Its the first time I've seen a company so keen to hammer the nails into its own coffin. I can only assume Elop has a plan that involves MS buying the rump of Nokia at some time in the future at a crazy low price. MS are already moving into hardware with the Surface, so making MS branded phones isn't such a big step (and Nokia have a lot of patents, which seems more important than sales these days!)

What's this qi wireless charging? Is it the same as the wireless charging on the S3?

Seems to be the same QI standard as with LG and Samung wireless charging.

Obviously it will be simple to provide a new battery and maybe a battery cover to give most phones wireless charging.

I do wonder how wasteful they all are.

perhaps you should just wait and see the images before you reach a conclusion.

the pureview's 41MP was on ever a means to an end it was never meant to take 41MP images.

are you normally aware of these things in advance. like if samsung have a similar conference how much notice do you normally get?

Samsung was teasing the Galaxy Nexus launch for weeks, and Apple has already begun teasing the iPhone 5 launch due next week. I've seen no such thing from Nokia. And if there was one it must have been very low key.

I know it's a little thing, but using a touchscreen with gloves is a great feature, it's a nightmare when it's winter and you can't even answer your phone!

Looks incredible, i've always loved Nokia's designs plus the Best HD display on a smartphone? Sign me up.

Here is the 820:

The handset is packing the same 1.5Ghz dual-core Snapdragon S4 internals you'll find in the 920, along with 1GB RAM and a 4.3-inch display 8GB of on-board storage and microSD support.

there are a few things that were not previously leaked.

-like the screen will work with gloves
-they say the camera is the best of any smart phone (A bit more about the advanced lens technology. The camera in the Nokia Lumia 920 is able to take in five times more light than competing smartphones without using flash, making it possible to capture clear, bright pictures and video indoors and at night. It also apparently compensates for hand movement while the photo is being taken. )
-Floating lens image stabilisation
-2000mAh battery
-1280x768 display with auto white balance
-new tougher glass
-NFC

Shame that they have to have WP8 on it, looks such a poor OS
I see BBC announced today that iplayer app will not be coming to W8
They really need to get the app developers onboard.
I know through recent consultancy work I have been running recently, many big players are shunning W8 app development.
I used to have a few windows phones from htc, on win5/6 but have since had an iphone and wont be turned by this.
I have seen the good in working with google (android) and their help along with apple on app development is superb. W8 on the other hand is turning out to be troublesome.

Q2 next year is when I will be looking for a new phone. I may get my hands on one sooner, I need to develop something for WP8. Funnily enough there's no SDK for it out yet, I don't know what they are waiting for. I hope it will be similar to WinRT so I won't have to learn something completely different again

Have you actually used Windows Phone, it's the most aesthetically pleasing OS in my opinion. Better than static grid icons.

Windows Phone has allowed more API's with 8, the BBC will not port the app on another code. We will see a vast amount of apps in the coming months as Windows 8 and Windows Phone share the same core and can be 'easily' ported.

How do people actually feel about walking around with a bright red or yellow phone though? Especially in a city. It's going to attract attention every time you bring it out...I wouldn't have one....the black one looks OK, but I didn't like them deciding to attack all other smartphones just because they've painted theirs in bright colours...

People like their phone to be 'seen'. I know this seems stupid but it's true, how many people who have got a new phone leave it out so everyone can see it. - without even thinking of theft. They're also eye-catching in phone stores in that point of view rather than a row of black slates - Lumia's stand out.
