From reading between the lines I think there are two things. Big sensor but also some clever stabilisation stuff that let's the shutter stay open longer. The entire imaging thing is internally mobile.

What I'm asking is this. you sound disappointed by what they've unveiled. Is there anything that could have happened today, at all, which could have caused you to come to a different conclusion?

I am disappointed I feel a strong WM would benefit the market. Possibly a screen to match the s3 in size for the top model, camera was a let down albeit the proper pureview is still too chunky for mass market yet I believe. Thought they may have changed the look for this, have they sorted sd card support for W8?

I really don't know to be honest but I was more hopeful, think I would prefer the Samsung model announced.

"The trouble is that many consumers will probably not hear the message. Before the launch I went out on the streets of New York in search of Nokia users. I found none and people told me they didn't know anyone who had a Nokia."

A few good words in the review.
I'm always quite baffled why everyone gravitates to one brand. Obviously it is half decent though no mention there of the screen technology used.

It is so odd as 12 years ago everybody had a nokia. It just shows how fads change.

I wonder where Apple and Samsung will be in 10-12 years time.

I find it hard to believe tat not only could he find anyone with a Nokia, but couldn't find anyone who knew anyone with a Nokia.

I'm in the market for a new phone. But the problem i see with W8 is the lack of apps. It really frustrates me because it could be great with the app support. But devs will not develop for it if it doesn't have market share to warrant the dev costs.

Its probably goign to be android for me next after iOS.

I'm sad .

Its also sad to see Nokia who were such a big player probably end up going bust if this fails.

First RIM RIP
Then Nokia RIP
Then apple lose market share because they innovate through the patent courts?

Its a sad industry atm.

I'm sad .

At some point there will be apps. Ultimately I presume that the arm side of the desktop, surface tablets and wp will all be integrated.

They say there are 100,000 apps already. Though I don't know what. MS needs to make their appstore viable so I guess they need to make it cheap.

Well being on MSDN myself, i got offered free appstore membership for the first year. Then after that its similar (cant remember details), as the $99 per year for iphone development with free submission etc.

So our games are coming out on W8 AppStore, but i obviously dont know what other devs are up to.

They were talking to some apps developers on sky news earlier who said that they wouldn't want to develop apps for windows phones because they don't have the market share. It's going to be really tough for Nokia and Windows to really get this thing going.

"Wireless Charging" - Just watched BBC News

The phone was put on a "big block" - which I assume is the charger and has to be plugged in (with a wire).

Aren't Nokia globally still the biggest sellers?

I don't have the numbers. But yes they sell a shit load. The problem is the are mostly $100 feature phones. Profit margin about $10. Where as apple can make $100 on a handset plus the on going revenue.

Down to 3rd behind Samsung and Apple in overall sales? They're definitely a shadow of their former selves.

One thing that intrigues me on the 920.

There's been statements claiming it uses the pureview technology from the 808, or something along those lines. Except it doesn't. The 808 doesn't have any OIS, it uses more traditional (camera) methods to freeze the action.

The 920 is interesting, and if it hadn't been for the 808 I would have been tempted.

Biggest shame is the lack of the Rich Recording. While the camera on the 808 has been a revelation, I've been equally impressed by the audio recording - its easily as good as the still & video, but hasn't received anything like the same amount of press.

It'll be interesting to see what Apple announced next week after having seen the deeply dull Motorola product announcements.

Nope, lost that title in May to Samsung.

Q2 figures not long out (units in 1000s)

Samsung 90,432.1
Nokia 83.420.1
Apple 28,935.0

Yes

The idea is that going forward it's all standardised so that all manufacturers of phone type things will be interchangeable, apart from apple obviously. And the door pocket of your car, your chair, all sorts of electrical devices etc will work with them.

Additionally there are music docks that will charge wirelessly and play the music wirelessly.

Perhaps you should take more interest in the News then? I don't own a smartphone but if I was in the market for one then the Nokia is the one that would take my money, despite my owning a number of Apple products.

I think this is the road back for Nokia. In fact I'm quite interested in buying some stock whilst their share price is low.
