And rightly so IMO.....Needed to put this topic in to break up the monotomy of Burke/1D/Minaj/Madonna threads
Sitting in living room with tv on in kitchen, I was suddenly aware of a bit of "I know what I like" playing. Thought I was hearing things, so put on news in here and sure enough, 20 mins later a piece about the awards ceremony last night

(now playing: Genesis's 1973 Rainbow Theatre performance from the Archives box set)

Didn;t Genesis stop being a prog rock band sometime around when Peter Gabriel left them?

Did any band of that time admit to being "prog"?

It was a gradual slide; "Trick of the Tail" and "Wind and Wuthering" were recognisably from the previous mould; "And Then There Were Three" and "Duke" less so, and then the more commercial material really took over, although there was usually at least one longer track with proggy aspirations. When Collins left it was thought that "Calling All Stations" might be in a more progressive vein, but the result was a rather dull collection of songs.

Phil Collins, probably due to his profile as front man, gets a lot of stick for being "the one who ruined Genesis", but I think Tony Banks is as much to blame.

Also good to see Peter Hammill recognized as a "visionary".

And Steven Wilson received the Guiding Light award.
Quite right too - Wilson is one of the most prolific and talented musicians we have in the country right now. Not only is his ongoing work always superb but his remastering of the King Crimson catalogue (and now ELP and Tull too) is fantastic and makes these old albums shine in a way I never thought was possible.

Back in the day, I used to consider myself a bit of a punk.

I read an interview with John Lydon (after he formed PIL) which namechecked Peter Hammill and went off to find out more about him.

It probably opened me up to more music than almost any other single thing I ever read.

I like Prog rock like Yes, ELP and Rush, however I tried one Peter Gabriel era Genesis Album "Nursery Crime", couldn't stand it and so never looked any further.

What definitive album would you say represents Prog Genesis?

Selling England By The Pound is probably my favourite Genesis album, but others might point to Trespass or The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.

By Trespass, I meant Foxtrot of course! D'oh!

(Although Trespass is good...)
