Wogan was a huge ratings flop for BBC1 for 7 years. Doing no better against 3 channels that The One Show does today against hunderds of channels. ITV could stick any old crap on against him and it would get into the TV top 10. That's why Never The Twain ran for 10 years. It spent its later years in a safe slot against Wogan. It can be no coincidence that Twain ended at the same time as Wogan did.
I remember ITV even put a posh BBC2-type documentary presented by Bamber (University Challenge) Gascoigne on against Wogan once (Looking at Bamber's Wikipedia page, it might have been the 1987 series Victorian Values). That may have been one rare occasion where Wogan won (or possibly not
) but not by the sort of ratings a light-entertainment programme should be getting against posh BBC2-type documentaries

I think beating Cannon and Ball's Plaza Patrol in 1991 was one of the quite rare Wogan ratings victories. I have to admit, Wogan was usually watched at Pizza Towers, though.

Of course the Olympics was a huge TV event, arguably one of the biggest ever. 90% of the population watching at least 15 minutes. So the National Television Awards probably should recognize it. However as the NTA is a "televison" award show and not a "sports" award show, shouldn't it celebrate the BBC's much-praised coverage rather than the sporting acheivements?

The ratings must have been acceptable to the beeb as they kept it on air for seven and a half years! I seem to recall everyone saying how he looked awkward interviewing Madonna. Most people must have seen at least a bit of Wogan in its day.

tricky question, and im sure the NTAs are happy to blur that line.
However can you really say those sporting moments, were not also TV moments? Look at the Moon landing, is was a great technological achievement, but also a big TV moment.
As I said above the NTAs will be happy to blur the line between the two.
The TV is still how most people saw the Games after all.

To be honest, I rarely saw ratings for individual editions. The Broadcast Top 100 was published on ITV's ORACLE, but it averaged the ratings for the three editions. Occasionally, an edition would creep into the BBC1 Top 30 charts which were also published on ORACLE.
And, to be fair, a lot of those Wogan programmes had their ratings dragged down by virtue of the last five/ten/ even fifteen minutes airing against Coronation St.
There is a massive Wogan rating on a BARB chart, possibly December 1991, but that is actually a mislabelled edition of Auntie's Bloomers.

Highest launch show for Strictly, Doctor Who's highest rating so far for the series, The X Factor over 10m with +1 although down on last year. I think they can all be pleased all things considered. When Strictly goes live that's when ratings go up but X Factor always timeshifts more. Can Strictly catch The X Factor?
I dont think you can loose almost 2 and a half million viewers and feel good, unless you started with at least 30 million.

Hmmm, the BBC stopped Wogan running into CS quite early on in its run, and I'm sure it was quite a big ratings success in its day. Em Farm wasn't a big ratings success in the mid eighties, even the last gasp years of Crossroads saw it in fourth place in the soap ratings. However, silly Auntie cancelled it for Eldorado.

Isn't Doctor Who up 0.82m on the corresponding episode last year following Strictly? 8.42m compared to 7.60m.
EDIT: Don't mind me. You're right as it's being compared to The God Complex on 6.77m. But the previous week The Girl Who Waited followed the Strictly launch show with 7.60m.
Well, just watched the Andrew Marr programme and thoroughly enjoyed it. I don't care how well it rates. I have something good to watch for seven more weeks.
Strictly didn't time shift much did it. Shame it wasn't an extra million to give x factor a run for its money. Be interesting to see how they play out once they are both live.

I thought Night and Day was a really interesting idea. It was a soap but had flashbacks, flashforwards, one character even appeared in one episode and made time stand still etc. It was quirky and different and I agree that Channel 4 should maybe go for something like this to play out once a week at 9 or 10pm.
Night and Day didn't really work because I don't think ITV knew what it wanted the show to be and its identity was confusing. It was scheduled at 5pm three times a week and was seen as a teatime soap, but I feel its content was too different and left field for an ITV audience and for it to be viewed as 'teatime soap'. Then it had an omnibus type episode which played out late Thursday nights, which was billed as an omnibus but had extra X rated adult scenes which wouldn't have been appropriate to show at 5pm. So what was the show meant to be? X rated and quirky or your typical teatime soap? It couldn't really be both.
Channel 4 would be a perfect home for a show that wanted to take on the soap genre and play around with it in an adventurous way. ITV was the wrong channel for Night and Day.
On the subject of soaps, have people seen the Emmerdale 40th anniversary trailer? I honestly don't think it's very good and I don't think it'll make the casual floating audience sit up and take notice. It doesn't even promote the live episode itself, just the whole week beginning 15th October. I guess maybe ITV will promote the live episode itself nearer the date? I hope so.
