Early US ratings indicate that The Voice held up very well against proper competition. ABC were down on last year but not out. The Mob Doctor will be off the schedule before next week (it dropped 27% on last week).

More interestingly, CBS might be starting to sweat a bit. How I Met Your Mother dropped over 20%, Partners bombed and whilst it did well, 2 Broke Girls isn't looking completely convincing at 9pm (down double digits on last year's 8:30pm premiere).

The 'proper' numbers may tell a slightly different story but those are the signs so far.

But your not... In overnights its only dropped about 300k since the launch

14/08 - 1.38 + 0.14 = 1.52
18/09 - 1.01 + 0.19 = 1.20

And in the officials, were it did indeed start with over 2 million its only dropped about 500k so far, but could rise again

14/08 - 2.01 + 0.20 = 2.21
11/09 - 1.49 + 0.25 = 1.74

But if you want to compare a consolidated with an overnight, then go ahead.. And may I also point out if you don't like a programme, doesn't mean that everyone else shouldn't have the chance to watch it, just turn over!!

Good. It's funny, likeable and deserves to succeed. I note it was trailed over the weekend, with a good joke in the trailer.

Mondays certainly aren't what they were a few years back with 24, House, DWTS at its peak, Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory...

CBS will bring back Rules of Engagement I guess which ought to boost the 8.30pm slot and give leg up to the 9pm hour at the same time. But the block is definitely weakened by the Thursday 8pm hour. 2 Broke Girls might skew younger than TAAHM so the actual ratings for it might not be as far off as the early numbers suggest.

Does "down 24% for DWTS count as a good week these days? I'm sure some spring episodes were nearer 40% down than 20%.

FOX are just in total disarray on Mondays. Seems like Kitchen Nightmares might be headed for the 9pm slot. Either that or Touch. But I can't see either doing huge business for them there.

Another good Monday for NBC. Seems like they'll have it in the bag so long as The Voice is on (even if it falls for the live shows again). They're really going to have a week of two halves - winning Sundays and Mondays, probably second to CBS on Tuesdays then collapsing on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Still, it's a lot better than last year where every night was awful.

Wednesdays are the only night I can't call. ABC will win 9pm comfortably and will definitely be in the hunt. But they could be let down by The Neighbors at 8.30pm (which will probably end up as Modern Family repeats) and Nashville at 10pm although I've heard some good things about it and it might hold onto the "soap" audience Revenge found in that slot last year. CBS and FOX will be fighting it out from 8-10pm as well. Could be any one of those three networks, I think.

Didn't CBS have an outstanding night last year, 2 Broke Girls had the mammoth lead in from TAAHM, and HIMYM hit series highs or close to it, so it was never going to live up to that. That said over 20% is a lot even accounting for that.

If 2 Broke Girls does fail this season I have to say I'll be thrilled, it's truly awful and the sooner it ends the talented leads can move on to better things. Partners was a massive disappointment as well, from the trailers I wasn't expecting much but the premise/cast was still enough for me to give it a go.

I'm not sure I share your optimism regarding ABC's performance. Assuming it maintains its incredibly old skew (and airing opposite The Voice I assume its primarily younger viewers they've lost) its going to be struggling to break a 3 in the demo. And that's for the premiere and would be down around a point (if not more) year-on-year and about half a point from the Spring cycle. Its going to be a very rocky road if that's the case.

CBS took a big gamble with the Monday block. We'll see what the demo numbers say but it doesn't look like that risk has immediately paid off. The question will probably be whether the drops on Monday are worth whatever pick-up they get on Thursday nights.

I wouldn't be surprised if Two and a Half Men moves back to Mondays, Partners is a goner, luckily Rules of Engagement will fill in until their midseason comedy Friend Me is ready. I like 2 Broke Girls but I think it needs a lead in like HIMYM or Big Bang Theory.

Good figures for Citizen Khan in the 10.35pm slot. I like the show and hope the positive ratings could lead to a second series.

Fascinating to compare that with rzt's UK figures earlier. So period drama Downton Abbey, far from being a pensioner only zone, is (with a 9.0 rating) twice as popular in its home territory in the demo as ultra-cool youth singing contest The Voice is in its home.

Now of course US ratings are different - more competition, longer established multichannels, PBS nothing like as well funded as the BBC as a non-commercial challenger,
different and often much better weather - but both US and UK broadcasters are trying to reach that younger audience if they possibly can. For the US channels, it is life or death. For the UK ones, it is not (at least not quite, and not yet), albeit that it is highly desirable.

In any event, the big story last night in the States I suspect was that Revolution comfortably won its slot even against proper (non-repeat) competition this week. Presumably a full 22 ep season order cannot be long delayed?

NBC had a great night last night. Looks like Revolution is on its way to getting a back 9! Impressive hold from last week. Bit of a mixed bag for CBS. While HIMYM and 2 Broke Girls delivered, Partners premiered lowly as I have predicted and I think that is a big slump for Mike and Molly. 2 Broke Girls would have done better, but for now, they can prove that they can do fine despite the quality of their lead-in. Even though, they will need one by midseason.

Castle did alright, and I think they have a shot at winning total viewers. Bones also was satisfactory. I knew DWTS would slump, but not to that degree. I am thinking they would be lucky if they scrape 15m total viewers. Hawaii 5-0 is causing concerns for CBS, but again, like Castle, total viewers spin could liven the show up. As the The Mob Doctors, episode 3 or no episode 3?

Its worth remembering that those are numbers for the top 25 markets only. There are more than 200 markets total in the US (210 I think) so that's just an early sampling of around 10% of the country. Chances are there will be some upward and downward adjustments when the other markets are reported although these may be a good indicator as to roughly where shows settle. I haven't ever really tracked the top 25 markets vs. everywhere else to be able to say that with an real certainty though.

So apparently, Revolution set time shifting records in the US...

that wont help Hollyoaks, if a repeat of Big Bang Theory can beat it. Wonder which had the better demo.

The Voice down 0.4 week on week. Revolution down about 14% in week two is promising. That's less than the average week two drop for new drama so NBC have reason to be happy. The half hours aren't quite so happy – 3.7 to 3.2. Not sure if there's a Voice overrun to strip out of that. If yes then Revolution obviously gets adjusted down in finals. If not that's a cause for concern for NBC especially as none of those viewers seem to have jumped ship to another 10PM drama. They just switched off.

CBS' Monday gamble doesn't appear to have worked. 2 Broke Girls is stronger than I'd expected but everything else is much weaker. Hawaii Five-0 in particular appears to have just collapsed. Rules of Engagement seems like the obvious replacement for Partners which is unlikely to last long with those numbers on CBS. Particularly not in the Monday comedy block. God knows what they do about Hawaii Five-0 if it doesn't rebound over the next couple of weeks.

Note ABC's numbers are likely going to face downward adjustments in the final figures when football is stripped out of some local markets. Hard to say much about ABC until we see the final figures but not a good start for Dancing. Castle appears to be doing OK although the year-on-year comparison isn't great if it can sustain this kind of level for the rest of the run ABC will be happy enough.

Fox exactly where you'd expect after last week. Bones basically steady week-on-week and The Mob Doctor continuing its journey to being pulled. Kitchen Nightmares seems to be Monday bound until baseball. After baseball who knows what the hell they're going to do.

If you want to critique the show, there's a dedicated thread for it over in the US subforum where most seem to be enjoying it. This thread is for ratings, and your point about ratings is not valid as you're trying to compare officials with overnights.

Not sure about last week's episode "struggling" either. The competition was tough last Tuesday with a goal-packed football thriller on ITV1, and it managed to improve to 1.2m (inc. +1). So I'm not too sure your forecast of it sliding all the way through the run is going to come off.

Clearly it's not a big hit, and I'm sure C5 were hoping for more. But equally I don't think it's the disaster some desperately want it to be.

Yay 2 Broke Girls is doing well! I really love that show. Was last night the first episode? Can someone explain how the US ratings work? What are those number thingies (demos?)

DOND had 800k yesterday, down from the 1m it had for last Monday's episode. I've had a look at the 4pm slot ratings to see what's been going wrong for it in the last few days and my only explanation is that DOND viewers are transferring to Lynda Bellingham's new show on ITV1. That Tasty Travels show launched a few weeks ago with only 600k, by last Monday it was up to 800k, it continued to build its audience last week and by Friday it was up to 1.3m and yesterday it was at 1.5m - quite a bit above the ITV1 slot average of c1m and it seems to be continually growing That must be one of the reasons why DOND has been down quite a lot for its last few episodes.


Normally I don't post the soap demos as on the excel file I fit about 12 shows for BBC1 and ITV1 each and I'd like a different variety of shows to be in that list rather than the same ones being in it all year round. Also it'd take quite a long time getting the soap demos as there's so many episodes per week and although the Monday episodes are normally the highest-rated, they may not necessarily have the higher 18-49 demo (particularly in EE's case) so it'd take a while getting all those figures.

But just in last week's case, the top-rated episodes of each soap had the following 18-49 demo rating:

EastEnders: 12.7
Coronation Street: 10.8
Emmerdale: 7.5

So in that list which I posted earlier today, EastEnders would've been 2nd, Coronation Street 3rd (both above the likes of Doctor Who and Downton) and Emmerdale 6th. EE has a fantastic audience profile in terms of age skew. Although the ITV soaps are perceived to skew old (I think Corrie skews averagely for a drama and not that old anyway), these shows are so big overall that they naturally pick up a large number of 18-49s. Normally if something rates above 6m, they generally pick up a large number of 18-49s even if they skew old. The only exceptions to this rule really are stuff like Antiques Roadshow, Lewis, Midsomer Murders, George Gently etc.

It started off around 2m and it’s now hovering around 1m so it’s heading one way (and it aint up) and god only knows what the figures will be in 4 months by the time this repetitive show limps to it’s season finale.

I predict 600k at best by season’s end. It’s only a shame there’s a second season. Be interesting to see if Five buy it assuming ratings continue to decline.

Really good rating for Paul O'Grady at 8pm last night. If you skim read the usual ITV bashing in this thread though you'd think it was a rubbish rating because apparantly they get 5m regularly in that slot and it's a given because of Corrie either side, not forgetting that the rating apparantly doesn't count as it's just a load of pensioners who can't be bothered to move between the two Corrie eps.

The Chase getting 3m seems to have been skipped over quite quickly as well.

What predictions do people have for The Paradise tonight, I expect it will get 8m, anything less will be seen as a flop
