So TXF didn't fall as much as everyone expected it to. I had a sneaky suspicion it might hold up fairly well...and it did. I think next week - it should increase. Another fall would be unacceptable. However, today is the first day everythings returned to normal since the Euro's. I'd expect everything to start to get a bump now as the weeks progress. The soaps have help up OK over these last 3 months all things considered. PCC did OK. I thought it would have been higher, but the competition was pretty tough last night.

Live At The...has run it's course. People will watch Michael McIntyre's Comedy Roadshow so just make that instead. Secret Fortune is okay but perhaps it could be spun off from the lottery draw?

The weekend should be free of soaps. I don't want that at the weekend. Emmerdale should just be 5 days a week. Double episodes of Corrie is lazy. This is why ITV has problems. Instead of a spread of shows they need to rely on a handful that are gradually losing their ratings potency.

This point gets brought up a lot and certainly its impressive that despite dropping nearly 3 million year-on-year its still the biggest show on television but that doesn't excuse the fact that its dropped nearly 3 million year-on-year. The X Factor has different ratings expectations than every other show on televisions and ratings are a game of expectations. The expectation is that The X Factor is pulling in 12 million viewers not 9 million.
Having said that I don't disagree with the general point that those suggesting the show is dead or on its last legs are being somewhat hyperbolic. The show clearly has life left in it.

From a practical point of view, I can imagine the drop in viewers is pretty alarming to advertisers - they've paid for a 12m rated show and are only getting 9m. All this guff about the damage to Cowell's ego having an impact on ITV's schedule or whatever is completely unimportant paper talk.
The reaction of advertisers will certainly be the most pressing concern for The X Factor drops. On that point you have to wonder what kind on knock-on effect (if any) that'll have on Downton this year. Will advertisers be confident it can hit the same levels as last year given the drops in its lead-in?

The advertisers are fairly okay with the performance I'd say but if it goes into 6-7m territory then there will be problems.

You have to remember the advertisers pay a premium for the extra viewers that x-factor gets, so any downturn will be of concern, especially in the younger demos.
Imho the bigger concern for the advertisers will be how the X-factor is seen by the public. If it loses some viewers, but is still seen possitively by the press and the general public, then they will be fine. If the papers and general public turn against it (to some extent you have seen a change in the publics perception of the celebrity since the olympics), then this is when advertisers will not want to be associated with it.

That happens all the time in America, but i didnt realise this happens in the UK as well. The trouble is what other programmes does ITV has to compensate advertisers, thats has the younger demo that X-Factor has.

True but advertisers are fairly okay with it at the moment at these levels, not as happy as last year but fairly happy. If it drops from these levels it'll be a shitstorm though.

Make goods can be incredibly complicated and they can also be incredibly simple. It varies from company to company and their relationship with a broadcaster. If for example someone has brought time during The X Factor as part of a large scale ad buy on ITV then the make good they get back will be different to the make good a company that has brought time specifically during The X Factor will get. How people are compensated can very from case to case as well.
With The X Factor one of the primary solutions may very well be that they get advertising during future editions of The X Factor at a reduced rate to make up for the shortfall. Or they may be given a free slot (although free is unlikely to be honest its more likely to be massive reduced) during something like Take Me Out later in the year. Or ITV may just end up refunding part of the buy. Its hard to give a blanket answer for stuff like this. It'll depend on what people want.
ITV's strong point with The X Factor is that despite the drop it remains an incredibly big show and still one of the best/only ways to reach certain demographics in large numbers so there's really no way advertisers can revolt too much or desert them. There just isn't another show that has this kind of reach so they need to keep doing business with ITV on it. For the record this is also why I think there's absolutely no chance ITV consider moving The X Factor from its current slot. There isn't any other show that can run from August-December and provide these kind of numbers and demos. And this is peak ad buying time with the run up to Christmas, back to school and the launch of Autumn product ranges. Its too important to advertisers to move it.

Indeed, if you think of it from the advertisers' point of view, the levels at which the X Factor is currently would still be extremely attractive, though of course, it's not 12m. For this reason, the hysterical reaction from newspapers about the X Factor's performance needs to be placed in a wider context. I suppose the difficulty might come if X Factor drops even further, but there is, of course a massive maybe over that one. Unless ITV have something waiting in the wings that they are convinced can secure a minimum of 8m viewers over a 2 hour slot in saturday autumn prime time, the X Factor will be going nowhere, Cowell 'break down' or not.

Apart from a new two hour drama on one and a new episode of a drama on the other? Both of whom have poor ratings. C4 was the big winner last evening. No doubt normal service will be resumed.

C4 (exc +1) - 10.0% - highest since 2007.
ITV1 (exc HD and +1) - 10.3% - lowest ever excluding the two full weeks of the Olympics. Lower than w/e 29/07/12 which had the first 3 days of Olympics.
ITV1 hit far more than other terrestrials. BBC1 at 18.9% is lower than average but not an abnormally low rating. C5 strong at 4.4%.

Is tonight the night when ratings get back to normal? No more Olympics, Paralympics, Jubilee, Euro 2012, welly-flinging etc.
August monthly officials (actually 5 weeks to 02/09/12):
ITV 1 (inc +1 and HD) - 11.3% (2011 - 14.2%). Change = Down 20.4%
ITV digital channels - 6.1% (2011 - 6.4%). Change = Down 4.7%
ITV total 17.4% (2011 - 20.6%). Change = Down 15.5%
So ITV digital channels affected far, far less than ITV1.
Crozier said August ad revenue would be down 12% so not a million miles off ratings actually delivered - although don't know to what extent ITV1 carries a premium - if it does then shortfall is greater.

really lest than 10 million in the officials, and your saying its not doomed, thats not how I read it at all. ITV had better hope that the fans for Miss Coles career boosting guest stint.
Cant say im surprised Dallas is most likely by older viewers since they saw the original, I would not be surprised if that group becomes the most loyal, younger people either dropping off, because no one is coming out a shower, or because they dont know the "joy" of waiting for something, and getting it onilne instead.
The Closing Ceremony is a little lower than expected, nice peak however. Hit a couple of BBC shows, but its a one off event so I dont suspect anyone is too worried.

I really feel terribly sad about ITV collapsing like this. If BBC one can just about hold up why can't they. They need to send every bit off cash they have to turn ITV1 around. And when it goes back to normal today and downton returns and things look better, they still have the same problem. And that I believe is a weak daytime schedule overall. Fixing Daybreak would help the old channel share.

Today takes the biscuit. I could rebut the various points that cropped up today, but I'd be at it till the early hours and contrary to popular opinion, I don't spend all my life on here posting about how good the BBC is, and how I'm infatuated with the Beeb, and how I want ITV dead... :yawn:
The most irritating thing for me is that those who are constantly on my back clearly only manage to read the posts where I have a pop at ITV/Cowell, and are somehow strangely totally oblivious to the ones where I have a go at the Beeb.
The fact is, with the likes of rzt gone, GeorgeS gone, Zoe gone, ronant posting once a blue moon, D.M.N. clearly getting naffed off, others reduced to lurking status, this thread is a shadow of its former self, and with the good natured and good humoured chit chat from a small band of genuine ratings enthusiasts all but vanished, has probably come close to running its course.
As DMN keeps pointing out, the ratings he collates each day on here - for those of us who frequent this thread, for no other reason than his own personal desire to do it - are pretty much all in the public domain, and you can get all the ratings you need online - so there's no need really to even come on here any more.
And frankly, if DMN stopped his roundups on here for just a few days, the thread would probably wither and die anyway, the numpties would probably keep on arguing with each other and asking the same stupid questions, oblivious to the fact no-one was posting any ratings any more....

I think your long standingness is admirable, but you hate ITV more than you love the BBC, given your posts and twitter contributions. ITV can't win in your book - they're damned if they put on dramas (because you accuse them of crashing/flopping), damned if they stick to soaps (chav schedule) and damned if they put out repeats. Even when they "win" on the night - point in case being Waterloo Road beaten last week, you still come out with ITV "flopping" with its new drama. And your comment about the Paralympics trouncing and sticking the knife in the X Factor was cringeworthy. You accuse others of pursuing an agenda - with your anti ITV view, you do the same!
Mind you, some might say I have an anti STV agenda, given my posts on another thread, so there we are.... However, that said you do sometimes comment on BBC failings and poor scheduling - so you are not all one sided!
If there are posters on here who don't post re a rating or whatever, as you've said they like you have a life outside DS forums - and/or have no inclination to wade through 16-20 pages if you miss a couple of days.
