Wembley crowd looks very, very poor indeed - indicator of reduced interest in England team - ties in with poor rating for game last Friday and may suggest lower rating than may have been expected for tonight (and possibly for future games coming up).

Betfair is a pretty good guide to SPOTY... It looks like a pretty clear cut 3 horse race for the winner.

So are there any overnights available for Wolfblood on CBBC yesterday? From what I've seen, it's something which many adults would have also watched.

I dispute that the BBC fails to invest properly in kids' TV: CBBC and CBeebies cost £111.1m in 2011/12, and children's programming has been protected from the cuts...
The BBC has certainly earmarked money for kids output but its hard to see where that money has actually been going at least in regards to CBBC's output. This is the first time since Sarah Jane launched that I can remember there being anything particularly noteworthy or ambitious on CBBC. And the only reason that appears to be happening is because they can't make Sarah Jane anymore. I'd also contend that they've never been able to find an engaging way to fill the void of Saturday morning kids shows. I'll happily concede that pre-school content still produces worthwhile output though. |

really are we going to pretend that England no longer loves football, and have no interest in the national team, when it comes to the big tournaments?
not even I can pretend that |

There's also the possibility that people are a little burnt out on sport right now. Its been a long summer.
And I'd also suggest that a lot of sports fans (which will include those who go and watch England matches) spent a small fortune on tickets for the Olympics and Paralympics and maybe aren't in the position to be doing the same to go and see a rather uninteresting England game. |

Indeed it is, I wouldn't be surprised if Shetland along with Case Histories are pushed back to 2013 to fill the Sherlock gap.

Back on the subject of US ratings for a moment.
The Voice adjusted up a tenth in finals to a 4.2 Meanwhile on cable Monday Night Football dominated with a 4.7 across The Voice's timeslot (plus an hour earlier) and a 4.9 post-10PM. Possible that NFL hurt The Voice a little. Its never had to face it before. Although I don't imagine they share much of a crossover audience but of course sports and the NFL in particular is one of the few times when men tend to control the remote outright as we've seen in recent years with Sunday Night Football crushing more female skewing shows. Also interesting to note that Sons of Anarchy returns tonight and will probably result in cable net FX winning the 10PM timeslot for at least the next couple of weeks. And potentially longer depending on how Vegas ultimately does on CBS. |

It's incredible just to think about the sort of athletes that won't make the shortlist. Take Alastair Brownlee. Best Triathlete in the world by a considerable distance, has dominated the sport for several years, capped it off with a convincing Olympic Gold medal and has a great story with his teamwork/rivalry with his brother Johnny. In any other year, he'd have a good shout at winning it. But this year I'd be stunned if the poor guy makes it near the final 10!

Looked a fair bit lower than that, capacity is 80,000, right? |

And Chris Hoy became the most successful British Olympian of all time and won't get a look in - could even be omitted from the top ten. I just hope the BBC give them the three hours they need and it'll be interesting to see who gets the nod as the third presenter along with Sue and Gary. If she wasn't off to be the face of C4 Racing it would undoubtedly be Clare Balding - but I get the feeling despite her continuing to work for the BBC she may not be continuing to work for BBC Sport, and yesterdays parade just highlighted what a loss she is to the BBC.
Maybe they should look at trying to spin the announcement of the shortlist into its own show. In theory there should be quite a bit of interest around it and it seems a bit of a waste to just do it on The One Show (is that where they did it last year?). And a stand alone announcement show would allow them to highlight some figures who might get squeezed out of the main show. Gaby Logan seems to be the most obvious candidate for the third presenter spot (assuming they don't want Balding to do it). Although given the role she played in both the Olympics and particularly the Paralympics they should really just let Clare Balding do it. |

Are we discounting Chris Hoy then? I probably would have had him on my shortlist. Maybe. Its at times like this I can be thankful that I'm not a sports journalist...

Although given the role she played in both the Olympics and particularly the Paralympics they should really just let Clare Balding do it. The BBC have regular presenters on their payroll. They should use their regular payroll staff. Clare Balding is freelance. It would be like the NHS just employing an agency nurse even though they don't need to. I think Gabby Logan, Gary Linekar and the irreplaceable Sue Barker are perfectly fine! Clare won't be short of a few bob. Although they could invite Clare to present the team award to Team/Paralympics GB. |

They should use Balding because she'd be the best person for the job. Not only is she a well liked and respected sports presenter she was one of the primary presenters for two of the biggest sporting events the country has seen in decades. The BBC goal for something like Sports Personality shouldn't be to deliver something that's 'perfectly fine'. They should be aiming much higher than that.

As I say, offer Clare a special role by presenting a team award to the Olympians/Paralympians, but there really is no need to go overboard. |

Has anyone won SPOTY more than once? I think that may put Chris Hoy in a disadvantage as he won in 2008. I think it's between Murray, Wiggins and Mo Farah.

I think it will be Andy Murray personally. That way the Olympics and normal sporting events are represented by one person!

And though Balding would be a loss to BBC Sport, I don't think you'd really notice it, at least on television, until the next multi-sport event. Horse Racing still made up the vast majority of what she did for them, and with that out of the picture what other BBC coverage is there to miss her from? |

Could the BBC SPOTY be on Wednesday 12th December?
On the Paddy Power website - the book closes at 8.30pm on that day? |

On the Paddy Power website - the book closes at 8.30pm on that day? Without wishing to stoke discussion of it... is X Factor finished the week before that? If so, that's the first clean Sunday run SPOTY will have had in ages and advances its ratings cause somewhat. |

The shortlist of candidates, which is not certain to be the traditional 10, will then be put to a public vote during the programme, which will be staged in front of an audience of more than 15,000 people at the Excel Arena on Dec 16.
