After some said this thread was getting too big for it's own good, for what it's worth, I asked DS if they would consider creating a separate sub-forum to discuss TV ratings with a list of reasons why (a thread for each day, threads for old TV ratings and discussion, scheduling thread, RPG thread etc), their response was just that it would be passed onto the forum administration team for consideration.

The England match did solidly well last night, a relief possibly for ITV after last Friday's poor rating. Trouble on the Estate sounds like Summer filler to me on BBC One, but Holby did admirably against the football. It will be interesting to monitor its ratings over the next few weeks as the Champions League may keep it around the mid 4m's.

No, they won't be pleased at all. I can understand the principle of getting it out before Mr Selfridge, but it won't make any difference if it's suffocated at birth. I'd have gone for a launch over Christmas, then in a post-Call the Midwife slot from January. Period drama overload, for sure, but it would have been pretty impregnable and the best way of getting it off the ground.

Unless, of course, they just don't think it's all that good and are happy to let it sink or swim on is own. But that would seem unlikely.

Hollyoaks is just not picking up at all, im really not sure it has a future at this point. More worrying is how much the BBC 3 repeat of EE is suffering in its new timeslot. Bad Education is still doing OK, but I expect it to continue to drop.

That's what my maths make it too. A huge increase - and it does seem like sports authorities haven't learned from the failure of ITV Digital and Setanta and still go for deals which are just to good to be true.

People are quick to point out they've got the multi-billion pound BT behind them and say it's all about triple play etc., but just like with the ITV Sport Channel and I'm sure we'll see soon with ESPN, a company isn't going to keep a product going that is losing them money - and in setting up "BT Sport" you can be sure that BT will ensure it's core business is protected if "BT Sport" goes bust, and if that does happen sadly it'll be the Rugby Premiership rather than the Premier League which feels the consequences more.


Be interesting to see what happens with Hollyoaks Later next week, but absolutely agree it is past the point of no return. The main reason it is surviving is C4 would find it very difficult to replace it, both in terms of filling the 6.30pm slot and keeping their hand in teen drama for anything like the cost of Hollyoaks.

The last thing I'd want to see is C4 extend their daytime shows into the 6pm hour and don't really want to see them just put more Simpsons or another US show in the slot either - though I guess they could go back to what they did in the 90s and have a varied schedule throughout the week, rather than stripped.

They also need to ensure they don't make the same mistakes as with Big Brother and have shows ready to role once Hollyoaks goes that actually appeals to the Hollyoaks viewer (both those watching and those who've stopped watching). Ideally I'd say they should have around four 8-part pre-watershed drama series over the year (perhaps one on E4), hoping at least one or two of them stick and can return as 13 parters.

Family Guy still gets the best ratings for BBC3 and its been repeated a-lot but viewers don't care, Even beats the Eastenders that has only been on once

for what is worth, keeping Hollyoaks on E4 is something that would need to be explored, if they were ever to sit down and have that big chat about where Hollyoaks can go from here. the one thing it has going for it, is it seems to feature plenty of Product Placement (at least going by news articles) which is still rare for UK TV, and should still have favourable demographics.

As for C4 post Hollyoaks, its a tricky slot no question, The Simpsons at 6pm, is a nice full stop on C4 daytime, which would seem strange at 6:30pm, also C4 isnt TEN so it cant extend C4 news to 1 hour, like TEN did when Neighbours moved to ELEVEN Whose logo looks nothing like E4s

Double Simpsons is a short term option, but C4 should have something new to put in the slot, the question I suppose is do you still want C4 to appeal to that demographic, or are they happy to let E4 do that from then on?

I guess Hollyoaks Later may do something for Hollyoaks ratnigs, but maybe that will boost E4s airing more than C4s, since those viewers are E4 viewers more likely to watch at E4 pace.

Will this affect the scheduling of Last Tango in Halifax? Surely, they won't want two Sarah Lancashire dramas running at the same time?

More likely repeats of US sitcoms or something with Nick Grimshaw and Jameela Jamil...

And 11's logo doesn't look that much like E4...

I think Nick might be a little busy with the Radio 1 Breakfast show*, to worry about C4s tea time slot. Also I suspect C4 may wish to age the slot, and let E4 capitalise on the younger viewers. The Simpsons probably is not as young as we think. No point repeating TBBT or HIMYM on C4, when its viewers will most likely be watching something very similar on E4.

*Its not like Chris Evans presents The One Show, 5 nights a week, and nor could C4 start a The 4 Show, similar to The One Show, but aimed at a younger demographic.

Midsomer has to compete with both Holby and Great British Bake Off in the 8pm hour, that's not going to be easy for any of them.

I would suspect that plenty will stick with Holby and Bake Off, thus leaving a large amount of viewers looking for something to watch at 9pm.

I don't think The Paradise will be too badly effected, although it's far from perfect.

C4 News is already an hour (well, 55 minutes). I think an hour and a half of Jon Snow would be too much!

I bet he'll be doing T4 on the weekends though...

I do think a kind of drive time version of The Big Breakfast from 5-7pm could do rather well, though at the moment I think C4's biggest opportunity in that area is probably 11pm at night and get into the late night chat market. With practically zero competition from BBC1 and ITV1 in late night it really is something C4 should explore IMO.


I do think product placement is somewhat overstated - the amount it brings in is very small in comparison to spot advertising and sponsorship.


I'd hate to see C4 go the way BBC2 has in the 6pm hour - and actually C4 still have obligations to a younger audience, especially as a lead in to C4 News which has been criticised by OFCOM for having demos which are older than they should be.

C4 Drivetime really? Are not the kind of people who would watch a Drivetime show, busy you know driving?

Might help if I could picture more than a TV version of the Simon Mayo drivetime show however.

The Simpsons' demographics for last night's episode (inc +1, from C4 Sales):

So a quarter of the audience is aged 4-15, another two-fifths is aged 16-34, with the remaining third aged 35+.

As a comparison, from rzt's list yesterday, Waterloo Road had 15% kids, 21% 16-34s and the rest (64%) aged 35+, TXF on Saturday had 13% kids, 27% 16-34s, 60% aged 35+. (Sunday slightly fewer % kids, slightly more % 16-34s). Obviously all these shows had many more total viewers, but you can see the commercial value of The Simpsons when it attracts 4.7% of all kids and 4% of all 16-34s.

I'm slightly surprised that there is a bit of a female bias for The Simpsons, at least among 16-34s, but then young men watch less telly overall.

Sons of Anarchy returned huge last night in the US. It pulled 5.4m viewers and a 2.8 in the 18-49 demo (a near 70% skew). The fifth season premiere posted series highs, up 9% in adults 18-49 from last year. The show aired 10pm-11.30pm and FX then repeated it twice in a row (11.30pm-1am and 1am-2.30am) which brought up the total audience to 7.5m (3.8) for the night.

In US finals The Voice got adjusted up to a 4.0. While it's lower than Monday (and the lowest ever for an auditions episode) it's probably a lot more encouraging to NBC than Monday's episode was seeing as it actually improved the 8pm hour vs last night.
