A massive 6.3m viewers watched Jonnie Peacock win gold in the 100m Channel 4 is a big channel it is either not many people are really interested out of a potential 20+ million, people still cannot be bothered to tune into anything other than BBC-1 or itv or the way the figures are collated is still very flawed. If Channel 4 had shown the Olympics would 20+ milliion have ever tuned in even though Channel 4 is available on same mediums as BBC-1? |

Is 6m really massive when you consider how many tuned into Big Brother during it's hey day and also considering how many people watched the BBC olympics coverage.

It doesn't look great.
I'm not sure if this is because I've lived through the British version for so many years but The X Factor US continues to feel incredibly stilted and dated. Even from a US perspective it just feels as if they've dumped the bog standard American Idol auditions in front of a crowd. The more I see the more I understand why NBC aren't shying away from it with their scheduling. It also feels telling that basically none of these clips or promos focus on any of the talent on the show. And you're right Britney doesn't come across as a particularly natural or engaging television presence. Demi Lovato comes across quite well in those (and other) clips though. Sticking with The X Factor US Simon Cowell has been going into defensive mode about the clash with The Voice next week. He's described it as 'dirty tricks' blamed The Voice creators for pushing the scheduling after Britain's Got Talent beat The Voice in the UK and then a few sentences later blamed Christina Aguilera for trying to overshadow Britney (and apparently Britney will be devestated by this turn of events). Its a very different tone from what we're used to hearing. Could Mr Cowell be a little worried? Speaking of TXF vs The Voice, I think The Voice will dent TXF, but not win the slot. There are so much hype and publicity around the new judges that curiosity factor will win over. That is how ABC's Revenge and Body of Proof (March premiere/season 1, 2010-11 season) last year managed to premiere with better than expected numbers. Sure both had lead-ins but nevertheless did a good job. Simon should really learn to suck it up and deal with it. He should be grateful that they have big names on the panel, otherwise the anticipation for season 2 will be nowhere as big as they do now. However, after the initial weeks, when they get to bootcamp and live shows and their ratings happen to plummet, who/what will Simon target next? Modern Family (Wed/ABC) and TBBT (Thu/CBS)? The two sitcoms managed to beat TXF last year, they will most likely do it again this year, if the Britney/Demi publicity fades. As for The Voice, their move is a risky one. The spinning chair gimmick is already done and they used their Superbowl lead-in card. Moreover, there has been no contestant/artist success stories from the two seasons aired so far (Then again, were there any successful models from the 18 cycles of Top Model? CW is currently airing the 19th cycle and this time, the viewers opinion also factors in). |

I agree about the PG peak. Yes, 6m is very good for C4 but "massive"? Not when OG events were routinely getting far higher than that, even in daytime. 20m for the 100m, 17m for Mo, 15m for the long jump are "massive".
4.1m is not a great debut for ITV's latest wartime detective drama, and suggests it may not have legs for a full series. Presumably Good Cop fell through the floor? |

Broadcast says it was a 5min peak 6.1m at 9.30pm
7.30 - 10.30pm averaged 3.4 million (although i thought the show finished at 11?) |

I do think, and hope, the Closing Ceremony will cause big problems for TXF on sunday, and I imagine will beat it. The CC is the final act in this most spectacular of summer celebrations, and is bound to outdo the opener last week. Must be an outside chance of C4 recording its best ever audience too (14m) - and TXF a low not seen since its very first episode?

Good Cop got 3.4m. Light beats grit 9 times out of 10. That's a problem with BBC1 dramas going forward.

Only a certain percentage of viewers will watch the Paralympics..(a talking head on tv recently asked if it would in time become socially acceptable - mainstream sport, pretty sure he was in ads or PR)
I have watched some of it, but I would not watch for hours on end. The stream I watched (for the Swimming/Athletics) was ad free and Balding free. British medal winners bring in big ratings, 3.4m averages and 6m peaks are impressive....Everyone knows that if these Paralympics had been shown ad free on BBC1.....ratings could have added 50% easily..... |

Bletchley could get a million more viewers on more watched Sundays. I think it has legs for Sunday nights. Great rating for the Paralympics!

Presumably Downton will though break ITV out of this circle of 4-5m drama ratings mundanity?

Homeland has a new regular slot on Thursday nights for C4. What do you think? I'm gonna go 1.5-2m

I can see DA being down almost 10% on 2011, for the overnights at least. It ought timeshift to over 9m easily, but I am predicting low 8m for the overnight rating.

The only approach would be to confine those dramas to BBC Two, making BBC one a grit and misery-free zone. Quite possibly even less people would then watch (due to the well-documented BBC Two effect on ratings). Ultimately, it should not matter a great deal what such a drama gets on BBC one, as long as it is seen as delivering the goods and the audience in the context of what it is, and what it is up against, as well as providing an alternative (something different) from what is served up on the other channels. |

I thought Four Weddings was top, with 12m plus anyhoo I reckon TXF will comfortably win it's hour, but whether that means anything anymore is moot |

But Bletchley only got 4m, plus whatever timeshift it manages. That simply isn't impressive for heavily trailed major autumn drama. Mothers Son, Biggs and Bletchley have all got c4m, might consolidate to 5m each, but that must be very disappointing for ITV - and those who pay their bills!

Trouble is, some periodically complain that BBC one only shows cosy, cuddly or lightweight dramas. But when they do show something that is dark or requires a fair degree of concentration or thought, then it's too much.

People are predicting 14m for the Paralympics Closing Ceremony
Dunno what you people are on, but I wouldn't mind some of it. ![]() Paralympics is a MUCH smaller event than the main Olympics, appealing to a smaller audience I cannot see it getting anything like 14m. 6-10m maybe? To be honest I think above 6m would be really impressive. Comparing the ratings of the Olympics and Paralympics is silly they are different events appealing to different sized audiences, you cannot expect the Paralympics to get a similar sized audience, it's ridiculous. |

Waterloo Road still rated quite low even without Coro St. on Itv1. I think it is struggling a little.
