i.e over the standard single length of 4 minutes.

Kanye West - Monster
Madonna - Frozen
Girls Aloud - Untouchable

If you ask me, that is one hell of a trio. Add to that Rihanna - Cold Case Love. What are some of your favourite 'long songs'?

Listen to Pink Floyd if you want long songs.

Rather cheesy I suppose, but 'MacArthur Park' is over 7 minutes long. Quite a feat to wallop so much onto a standard 45rpm single!

The Wine Song - The Cat Empire

Brilliant song live as well. The entire crowd sways and claps for the verses, and bounces for the chorus.

I'd argue that the minimum length for a 'long' song is about 7 minutes, but you can sometimes make a case for 6 depending on the song.

My favourite Pink Floyd album, 'Animals' has just five tracks, with the three main ones being over 10 minutes long (Dogs being the longest at 17 minutes). 'Echoes' from the album Meddle is also 23 minutes long.

Other favourites include:
'2112' by Rush (20:52)
'Rime of the Ancient Mariner' (13:39), 'Seventh Son of a Seventh Son' (9:58), 'Hallowed Be Thy Name' (7:10) and 'When the Wild Wind Blows' (11:02) by Iron Maiden
'Citizen Erased' by Muse (7:19)
'I Want You (She's So Heavy' by The Beatles (7:47)

Surprised there's been no mention of Bohemian Rhapsody yet.

I have a long song playlist I used to listen to while doing homework so I didn't have to change the song too often Anything over 6 minutes for me is what I'd consider long(er than normal, anyway).

My favourites:
Monster - Kanye West (6:19)
Teqkilla - M.I.A. (6:20)
Untouchable - Girls Aloud (6:43)
House of Balloons / Glass Table Girls - The Weeknd (6:52)
Come Together - Annie (7:50)
Pyramids - Frank Ocean (9:57)

Genesis - Supper's Ready comes in at over 20 minutes. One of my favourites.

Echoes - Pink Floyd, 23 minutes (IIRC)

And the grandaddy of all long tracks, the much maligned Tales From Topographic Oceans by Yes has four tracks one on each side of the original vinyl.

Although I suppose Thick As A Brick by Jethro Tull has one track, stretching across both sides of the original vinyl, totalling something in excess of 40 minutes.

I would go with many of the ones already suggested here, especially by the likes of Maiden & Pink Floyd, but here are a few more of my own....

Black Rose Immortal - Opeth (20:14)
Ricochet, Part II - Tangerine Dream (21:12)
Lateralus - Tool (9:24)
Pushit - Tool (9:55)
Ghost Love Score - Nightwish (10:02)
The Incident - Porcupine Tree (55:15)*

*The Incident is split in to 14 parts but it is intended to be listened to as a single piece.

Quite right.

I would add, though, there there are many gems out there waiting to be discovered. Just a handful of which are listed below -

Chain Lightning - Don McLean
- Arguably better than American Pie.

Nights In White Satin (album version) - Moody Blues
- Poetic brilliance.

Love Lies Bleeding - Elton John
- From when he and Taupin ruled the music world.

Total Control - The Motels
- Lost 80's classic

The Holy River - Prince
- Up there with Purple Rain

India/ Mountain Time - Joe Bonamassa
- As good as anything Clapton did.

All Along The Watchtower - Jeff Healey Band
- Bluesy version from freebie CD is better than Hendrix.

Ordinary People - Neil Young
- Sprawling, but brilliant.

Creedence Clearwater Reviival - I Heard It Through The Grapevine
- Just give it a try, you won't regret it.
