Looks interesting.......

Am I going to buy one, no. But then again I am not after a 7" tablet device but it would be on the short list if I was.

I don't think the loss of quad core to dual core compared to nexus 7 is going to hurt it.

As always the key is going to be app support. I've been playing with Amazon appstore UK the last few days and I have to say they need to build up content which I am sure they will be. AFAIK they can run any android app on there but don't know if google play is going to work on the Fire HD.

I will get one if there will be access to media such as movies and TV shows like there is in the US.

There won't be. When Amazon say 'access to' they mean rentable / purchasable.

That access isn't free in the US either though. Amazon Prime, which includes the free streaming, is $79 per year in the US.

Here in the UK they will sell a LOVEFiLM subscription instead, but the range of content available will be much smaller.

Looks good from what I've seen.

It's not part of the Fire range though. It's just called Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Paperwhite 3G.

Oh I don't want free stuff I want to be able to buy and download movies and tv shows like you can do from itunes. If we can do that and it isn't only content from lovefilm they are offering them I will buy one. Have pre-ordered the 16 gb but will cancel if the only content available is through Lovefilm streaming.

"For an HD device, 8GB of storage is not enough. High definition content is substantially larger"

Translates to 'just like other major manufacturers we cripple the device by not spending that extra dollar on an SD card slot'.
When reading the blurb I was initially thinking it had an SD slot.

A decent tablet even if only dual core.
Without a GPS it can only be recommended for those wanting Kindle facilities. Lack of GPS in a tablet this size makes it feel cheap.

They have adopted the new production method of using a single piece laminated screen.

Sounds good. They make the screen sound quality! Double the storage of my Nexus. If I watch hd movies it's a usb stick I have to use. Not the most elegant solution. Are they carefully avoiding mentions of the operating system?

It comes with 16GB or 32GB. I doubt that downloaded content will be blu ray, you can get compress HD down to a couple of hundred MB per hour and still be pretty good on a 7" display.

As for SD card, they want you tied into their cloud services, same as google. So unless you are going away for several weeks without access to internet then 32GB should be OK.

Yep, they all do.

It's them with their head in the clouds dictating to us.
Supply and demand, what comes first?

what is the situ with Kindle Fires and the Google Play store? It does seem that Amazon's app store is lacking in size in comparison.

http://www.android.gs/install-androi...n-kindle-fire/

for the first generation, it was fiddly, and for that reason, I'm out.

Hopefully that situation will change. On my Nexus 7, I can buy apps from Amazon if I want, though understandably, the default is the google store. It should be the same on the Kindle Fires.

Maybe as the Kindle Fires take off (they did do well in America first generation) it will be obvious for developers to chuck their apps in both.

Comparing specs the only real thing I see on the Fires that I'm missing is extra storage.

Amazon don’t want you to buy through Google Play though. They want to get a cut of the money when you pay for content on their app store – it’s part of the reason they can do the tablet for the price.

sure and Google would prefer you to buy from the Play Store, for the same reasons. But they still let you have the choice.

Hope Amazon have fixed their app store filtering system. Whilst they test and curate apps for their store like Apple, the app filtering system is based on OS version rather than screen size and other requirements that the Google Play store uses to ensure that customers get the right compatibility for their devices. If you're buying stuff for a Kindle, make sure you read the description fully to ensure you get an app that's compatible.

Nexus = computer
Fire = gadget which apart from size is close in many ways to the the iPad.

Obviously the Fire can probably be hacked to become more computer like.

Edit: It's based on ICS

Wonder if the the 8.9" Fire will become available...

A lot of people don't need 3G, just Wi-Fi

Also, it will probably cost to turn off the ads:

You can also use your mobile phone as a hotspot for intenet on the go.

With all this bigging up it seems to have the same chip in it as the Archos 80 G9.
You also get GPS, an SD slot and HDMI with the G9.

The media do speak a heck of a lot of rubbish. It is not a new chip and being cut down there is surely plenty of profit margin.

Especially so with them cutting out the middle man.

Okay, so I had just decided to invest in an iPad, and this comes out !!

I already have a Kindle keyboard 3G.

Am I right in thinking that the Kindle Fire is still best for reading and downloading books etc - but that it now has workable browsing and email?? Anyone actually used one? Does it compare to the iPad in terms of ease of use??

Any help gladly received......

The kindle fire is a tablet with an lcd screen. An e-ink display will be better for reading books.

Thanks
The Kindle Fire's main downfall for me would be the lack of a camera, I think.....

Also, while browsing around here, I've found that Blackberry Playbook is selling for between £129 and £159!! Seems like a bargain to me....I might go along to Curry's tomorrow to take a look ---- and probably get even more confused.
