Unlocking a iPhone 4s Free
I have an iPhone 4s on a orange contract and have been for 7 months I would like to unlock it to put my works sim in which is on Vodafone I spoke to orange and they say they want £20 to do it! I find this totally unacceptable is there another way?

The only official way to unlock an iPhone is to have the IMEI put onto Apple's unlocked handset master list, which only networks have access to.
The only other way to unlock it is to jailbreak the handset. |

You bought an iPhone. Do the research. apple only care about the money. Hence why you're paying lots per month and have to pay an unlock fee

O2 will happily unlock iPhones (or indeed any other phone) bought on pay monthly for free. Orange however will charge a fee. As will 3. Can't speak for t-mobile or Vodafone |

Networks can charge whatever they want to unlock the phone. Just by the fact you want to unlock, they will assume you plan on leaving them and taking your money with you so they will charge you for it.
Even if you just plan to sell the phone and get another contract with them, they will still end up subsidising your new phone so again they are more than happy to charge you. There is no way round it, you can either pay what their asking or keep your phone locked. |

You would also have found out that Orange charge to unlock all handsets. |

Echoing what others have said, considering the cost of the phone should you brick it...pay the £20 and get that warm fuzzy feeling it will be ok

Actually, if you took your own advice and did a little research you'd have found out that Apple used to refuse to let networks charge an unlocking fee. They only stopped this because some networks were getting very whingey about it.
You would also have found out that Orange charge to unlock all handsets. |

It's nothing to do with Apple, as others have said the likes of Vodafone unlock their iPhones for free. Out of interest, does Apple track who has what handset? Can you get Vodafone to unlock an Orange iPhone for example? |
