Priyanka Chopra - next big music star?
To those not already familiar with Priyanka, she's a huge Bollywood star and has been in the industry for a few years now.
She has signed up with UMG, has the same management as Gaga and will be debuting her single next week at the NFL in America feat Will.i.Am, produced by RedOne. As a Bollywood fan and knowing Priyanka in that capacity, this is all really weird for me but I wish her success in her career. http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/bollywoo...lady-gaga.html |

I dont know. I wish her well but I think a lot of mainstream music listeners are a little too biased or even racist to give her a proper chance. It's just a fact, but if the music is good then hopefully it does well!

It sounds promising for her, I understand she's collaborated with Swedish House Mafia on her album and a few other big names. I think she will have a lot of support from Bollywood fans but like you say- with the mainstream music listeners, who knows? She does have a pleasant singing voice.

I think she will be, she has had a lot of money spent on her launch, she seems to have been working with every big name at the moment under the sun, and she is stunning and can actually sing OK. I think she'll do well, and it will be interesting to see an Indian star make a crossover into Western pop culture, if she's successful then she might start a trend....
I can't wait to hear In My City, I'm looking forward to see her debut, hopefully it will take off for her as she seems like a nice girl from what I've seen of her.

She's worked with Jay Sean too I'd imagine, makes sense as they're friends.
And her second single will have an Indian flavour. Apparently it will be released a week after 'In My City'. |

Jay Sean got a #1 in the US in 2009, and Far East Movement (who are also on the same record label as Priyanka, Lady Gaga and will.i.am) got a #1 in the US in 2010. So I think the US are open to asian artists, especially rhythmic radio.
I'm a bit worried for the first single. I like will.i.am, but it's RedOne I'm worried about, his songs are very mediocre and generic, and it's a shame that she might lose all individuality on her very first single. Her 2nd single sounds more promising. Lots of songs with asian influences were chart hits in the US in the mid-00s. will.i.am himself has produced some. |

A big Hindi film-inspired song like Jai Ho, produced by somebody like A.R. Rahman, would be a fantastic single, especially if she had a major platform and budget to perform it.

^I wonder if she would want to steer towards this. I'd imagine at the moment it's about building her up as a credible artist with a few hits under her belt, then she can go all desi on mainstream.

Jai Ho is the last big hit with asian influences that I can think of.
But there used to be loads, like Buttons (also by Pussycat Dolls), Beautiful Liar by Beyonce/Shakira, Get Busy by Sean Paul (used the Diwali Riddim), Don't Phunk With My Heart by the Black Eyed Peas (samples two songs from Hindi films from the 70's), Candy Shop by 50 Cent, etc. Maybe we'll get another resurgance of songs like this at some point during this decade. |

Better link there....I didn't like it at first, but now I think it's a really fun song. Will.i.am adds nothing though. It's quite safe, but it's interesting to hear her on a pop song. Hopefully it does well for her, I like the song. |

It's good, a nice enough and fun track. Not anywhere near strong enough for someone who's supposed to be 'the first big Indian music star' though. It makes me think of a far weaker version of On The Floor by Jennifer Lopez.

It's cute, but the lyrics are corny, her voice completely altered and the music (except the intro) is generic. It sounds better suited as a Hindi movie song rather than a pop song.
Here's the promo video for the NFL pre-game show: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvxQw05QrCk |

It sounds like an Indian flavoured On The Floor, but with a bit less energy....I really like the song though, it makes me feel happy... ![]()

She's signed to the same management as Lady GaGa and apparently she's getting an American release too, so maybe she could replicate what Jay Sean did....I hope she has success.

Priyank Chopra has a good singing voice, great looks and sex appeal however her debut single 'In My City' just doesn't cut it for me, it's average at best and if she wants to compete with the likes of Rihanna, Katy Perry and Lady GaGa then her music has to stand out a lot more and catch people's attention. I really wanted to like this song... here's hoping her next is a lot better and less generic.
