I have never understood why the Square does not have a proper Medical centre. I think getting rid of the car lot and building a medical centre would be a good idea, then some of residents could work there and the Square would have a new GP too...

Or......put a new GP in the already existing doctor's surgery.

I disagree.

Coronation Street opened its medical centre with much fanfare but in the 12 years that it's been part of the set, it's served next to no purpose. Gail worked there for about 8 years before we'd even seen inside the place. There's a creche in there too but I'm damned if we've ever seen it.

Even now that the medical centre is being used more, its potential for storylines is limited. All we can realistically get is people sitting in the waiting room and people in the consultation room. That's it.

Corrie have wasted a large part of their backlot with the medical centre set. In fact, it's the largest premises on the set (after the factory) and we see a tiny amount of it in reality. That space could have been put to much better use, with a small parade of shops or even a more believable location for the bistro.

Soaps can achieve that through having a simple doctor's surgery (which, if my memory serves, EastEnders already has).

EastEnders do right to steer clear.

Yeah, a GP's office is enough, even though it is in a bit of an odd location in the Sqaure. For more serious stuff, there is a hospital set, which we see very often, most recently with Janine and her baby.

But pratically all babies are born or brought there, then we had Tyler and Jack being in hospital, Tanya visiting the doctor there etc.

By the way, is Tanya cured now, or what? (Yes I know it takes years to know for sure, but I don't hear about ehr getting any form of treatment, or being in any pain or discomfort no more, so I assume this was it for now? Bet it will return though).

I don't think a medical Centre would work but they should get rid of the car lot its a bit of a wasted set really and I don't think they have ever known what to do with it, move the minute mart there with some flats above then have the minute mart and Laundrette burn down caused by them dismantling the old shop then that area can be rebuilt with the Laundrette coming back and an extension to the Queen Vic or somthing.

Which is why I think they should turn the building into a retirement home or a community centre.

The car lot should have some redevelopment on it but a medical centre serves no purpose. This is Eastenders, not doctors.

I'd keep the car lot portakabin thing. I agree that it hasn't served much of a purpose recently, partly because it's suffered from the awful "Boxers Jim" that opened. Jack and Max used to spend time together at the car lot, but now that Jack has cleared off over there, the gym gets far more screentime. Janine and Michael's business (whatever it is) is also featured a lot. However, the car lot is still a good place to have those private conversations between characters with something to hide, or to show shifty phone calls. I can also see Jay taking over, if Phil tells him he has no future at the Arches. It would be a good way for Jay to demonstrate he's able to provide for Abi or Lola/Lexi.

As for the medical centre, I agree with those who don't feel it's necessary but if they were to have it, I'd put it where the Argee Bharjee currently is. We barely have any scenes there either (although there was potential with Tamwar/Afia) and there's far too many social places to give appropriate time to (in real life, people naturally tend to have preferences too). For example, the Vic now serves food, you have the cafe and R&R's. Then there's the fast food restaurant where Fatboy recently worked (which may or may not be phased out) and the park which is featured infrequently.

Yup, let's pick on the women.

What about Jack? One of the most promiscuous characters that have ever graced soap? HE would be lifting with STD's more than Kat or Whitney as he shags about alot more.

I don't actually see the need for a medical centre TBH, like another poster has said the one on Corrie hardly adds much to their proceedings. Nothing wrong with the Doctor's where it is on EE IMO, there are still small practices like that about - would be nice if they actually cast a Doc to go with it though!

I think you took the STD comment a bit too seriously.

Unless it's got one of these -> next to it I tend to!

But the principle still applies - who was picked on first? The women. Not the Sperminator!

(by the way can't stand this incarnation of Kat so I'm not sticking up for her just the fact that women will always be called out on being 'free and easy' whereas men aren't. Yet we're supposed to be equal ...... hmmmm)

I agree with you that Jack, or any man doing what he does, deserves just as much flack (that rhymes! ), but I don't think the poster wrote his/her post intending to highlight only women.

I just feel that some people on here (and by "some people", this isn't a thinly veiled reference to you) are all too eager to play the "OMG, only women are sluts, are they??? You sexist pig!!!" card, regardless of whether there is a attached to the original comment or not. Yes, we are equal, so stop trying to play the martyr all the time I say.

I think this is a problem with the ways soaps/characters are written, as well as viewers' attitudes though. Whereas Whitney and Kat are portrayed as quite unambitious and always looking for the next party, Jack is portrayed as a successful ex-policeman, current businessman; a calm, collected, smooth operator. In some ways, it feels like the writers want to make you think Whitney and Kat are "gagging for it", whereas Jack just lets the women come to him. After all, men like him are never desperate, right? Their behaviour is exactly the same, but we're meant to take their approach to the opposite sex and character into consideration too.

It would be nice if EE had a male character that was meant to be unlikeable for sleeping around. Make the man a "homewrecker" for once, instead of a "lad" or "player". Have Joey sleep with Kim or something. Ruin Ray and Sasha's life, don't just show Joey pulling his trousers up with a little wink and leave it at that.

Good post and I know what you're saying but if we were TRULY equal it wouldn't only be women getting in the neck for shagging about would it? It's the 21st century and yet women are still 'sluts' and men aren't. Or put it this way, a woman being called a 'slut' or 'slapper' is nearly always meant as an insult. How many men do you hear shouting at other men 'You SLAG!' (if they did they'd probably laugh in their face! ) but I've heard women say it to other women and men say it to women. To ME it's one of the fundamental differences in attitudes between the sexes that need to be addressed. But hey, it's getting all too serious and going off topic so I'll leave it there

Personally, I've heard none admittedly, but I think it's unfair/unhelpful to the cause to suggest it never happens. Creates a culture of apathy IMO. Some bloke might think "Oh, if Dave can get away with banging his missus' sister, why can't I?".

In general though, I do agree with you that women appear to get it in the neck more. I think the media (including EE) can help on this issue loads, but they won't. 3/4's of the stories in the celeb mags are all about celebs cheating, however this is a strange situation where no-one of either sex is condemned for cheating, just praised. So just a general lack of integrity there, rather than sexism.

Anyway, I agree this is off topic, but it's been nice discussing it with you anyway.
