I'm finding it very hard recently to find any sweet or new pototo's where it does allow for them to be microwaved. Is it dangerous or unsafe to micorwave them when it says to boil them or use them on a cooker in general only?

New potatoes can explode if just put in the microwave unless they've been pricked with a fork all round.

Though you can put them in a Pyrex jug and cover with water - that will be okay.

I buy baby pots and do them in micro..I cut them in half..add a small amount of water..cover with cling film and "prick it all over"on full heat for 4 mins then cover with a tea towel..( this sort of steams them without over cooking. Come out lovely!

Never had a problem.
If I want to boil/steam them then I put them in a microwave bowl with a little water and pop the lid on.
I don't prick them.

If I want them (semi) roasted then I put them on a plate with a little oil and salt and use the combi grill or jacket spud preset.

Thanks for the replies so far. I have anorther 2 questions if anyone would be good enough to help me out on these too. Is it true that only new and sweet potato's are the only healthy one's to eat? The other question was how many potato's equal 1 cup of potato's?

I bought some salad potato's because it said they are microwaveable but when I looked on the nutrional information online, it looks like they are not that healthy.

Many thanks.

They are all healthy as part of a varied diet. We need carbohydrate for energy and that's what they give us. They are also quite high in vitamin C. Sweet potatoes are higher in vitamin A than the others but you can get vitamin A from plenty of other things in the diet. The skins of potatoes are excellent for roughage and nutrients.

On the sites i looked at, they said that salad potato's had too much cholestorol in them but I think both where of the unsaturated fats, with the poly one being higher at 9.3% or so compared to about 6 something % on the mono unsaturated one.

Its the cholestoral info that put me off a bit on the salad ones and I think the sweet and new ones have no cholestorol in them

No I wasn't joking. When i was looking up at the nutrional information of potato's, instead of coming up as per potato, it came up as per cups! Not mentioning how many potatos equalled one cup and therefore not very helpful in counting my nutrional intake.

There is no cholesterol in potatoes. Cholesterol is an animal fat, not a fat found in vegetable matter.

Perhaps the OP was looking at potato salad? The mayonnaise would be high in cholesterol.
