Marianne Faithful didn't release it as a single but she caused a big fuss with Why D'ya Do It?

It certainly got the album noticed.

Oh and Pink Floyd.

I have no idea it seems. But good question.

In 1981 the Dead Kennedys 'Too Drunk To F***' reached #36 in the charts. I doubt that was the first though.

F**k what I said, it don't mean s**t now. Love a bit of Eamon every now and then.

"Louie Louie" by the Kingsmen, which reached no. 26 in the British charts in 1964, allegedly contained the f-word, although it was almost impossible to detect what words were actually being sung throughout the whole song.

The track was the subject of an FBI investigation about the supposed obscenity of the lyrics, an investigation that ended without prosecution.

Not sure. I'm sure there are a few songs from the 70s that do.

The most brutal song that I can remember off the top of my head is Tupac's "Hit Em Up". Probably the song that made him a target for death by other rappers and a hate figure. The last few seconds of the song is a bit "Ooh". I think the hate between artists from this generation to make them seem interesting come from these two, but no one has as much competition between them as much as Tupac and Biggie had.

Ever since the heavy urban domination in the mid-00s, swearing is so common in songs now. I kind of forget there was a time where it was rare to hear swearing in a mainstream song.

Not by a long, long way.

Apeman - Kinks
- "The air pollution is f*ckin up my eyes."

Who Are You - Who
- "Who the F*ck are you."

Working Class Hero - John Lennon
- "You're still f*ckin peasants as far as I can see."

Peaches - Stranglers
- "Is she trying to get out of that clitoris." *

* Not swearing, but pretty risky for the time.

Peaches also contained the words "Oh sh*t", there was a radio edit where they sang "Oh no" instead IIRC.

Also "what a bummer", replaced by "what a summer".

"Clitares" is supposedly a French word for bathing costume, but I'm not convinced.

The PMRC (the group responsible for parental advisory stickers) were formed after the founding member heard and objected to the lyrics in Princes "Darling Nikki"

Apparently if it had got a few places higher in the charts then Top of the Pop would have had to play it.

I'm sure Jello would have recorded a clean version for them if they asked nicely.

In the song Rock me Amadeus by Falco it really sounds like he says the C word halfway through..its just a german word that sounds a lot like it but when i was a kid it was the only part everyone used to sing along to besides the chorus.

Hey Jude by the Beatles.

Hey Jude - Paul says "oh f***ing hell" at one point in the recording when he goes wrong! Apparently in an interview about it, John Lennon said "Paul said a naughty word" lol!
Has this bit ever been bleeped out, because it is so faint in the recording that you can hardly hear it. If not then its probably the only song that has been played on pre watershed radio and tv with the swear word still in!

A doo-wop group called the Blenders had a minor hit on the American R'n'B charts back in 1953 with a song called "Don't F**k Around With Love". Unsurprisingly, it did not crossover to the mainstream pop charts.

I just had to listen to the song after reading that and it does sound like he says the C word during the second verse! Funny!
