I had the misfortune of listening to Radio 1 the other day.

it was on at the gym.
my goodness, what a bizarre mess!

who is this station supposed to appeal to??

i dont quite understand what its supposed to be.
is it a mainstream pop station or what?

i was in the gym for 2 hours and must have heard one pop song.
the rest was just alternative nonsense which has never been in the top40, not has a chance of entering the top 40.
infact its almost as if they are trying desperatly to be cool, OR they only want to appeal to 35-50 year olds.

kind of reminds me of a dad dancing very badly at a wedding.

What's wrong with alternative 'nonsense'? Music is about so much more than the top 40, you know.

I have listened to the top 40 in 15 years.

Doesn't sound like Radio 1 at all... they usually play the generic club bangers in the top 10 on repeat.

Depends what show and what time generally 6am- 7Pm ish you get top forty some indie aternative thrown in with Ferne or whomever she deems totes amaze but later on Annie Mac, Zane Low thats when you get alterntive etc

This is the most played (A-List)

Biffy Clyro - Stingin' Belle
Example - Say Nothing
Fun - Some Nights
Labrinth - Treatment
Little Mix - Wings
Mumford & Sons - I Will Wait
Ne-Yo - Let Me Love You (Until You Learn To Love Yourself)
Owl City & Carly Rae Jepsen - Good Time
Pink - Blow Me (One Last Kiss)
Plan B - Deepest Shame
The Killers - Runaways
The Script - Hall Of Fame (feat. Will.I.Am)
The Vaccines - Teenage Icon
The XX - Angels
Two Door Cinema Club - Sleep Alone

Whilst it's not all 'club bangers' or X Factor type stuff it's nothing too alternative.

There's only ONE X Factor song on the A-list lol (and usually there's none).

I don't think it's quite as simple as that.

To be honest ive been listening to R1 quite a lot these past few weeks and I think it's brill. Used to listen to it a lot around 2003-2007 but went off it when I left college and started work. Forgot how much I loved Chris Moyles. Can't believe he's finishing. I much prefer Fearne on the radio too.

Depends what time you were listening to it. It could have been a specialist indie show (presume they still have these)

I quite like Radio 1- it's the best one to have one whilst driving because there's no adverts and they sometimes play a decent song.

Last night, for example, amongst the dross like Wiley and One Direction, they had Of Monsters & Men, Nero, Mumford & Sons, Frightened Rabbit and Jake Bugg.

I'll take that over the Jessie J/ Ed Sheeran/ Carly Rae Japseye hell-hole that is Capital.

Trouble is they are both failing the British public IMO, in different ways.

R1 seems to be suffering from a severe bout of "too cool for school", almost as if they are so determined not to be mainstream that they don't stop to think "is this a good enjoyable listen?", and as far as I can hear Capital seem to play a very limited range to death, ad blinkin' nauseam to the extent that I still hate "Glad You Came" with a passion unmatched in the Western world only because I had to listen to it for what seemed like decades....... (Yes I know The Wanted have a deal with Capital's parents and all that but, Christ give us a break!)

Is there not some middle way that combines the mainstream with the more edgy stuff? At the risk of sounding like a shocking old fart that's what R1 used to do back in the day mainstreamish till evening, and then progressively less so until the great man Mr Peel appeared about 10 or so to inform us of the "latest thing" he'd just been up to musical Mt Sinai to collect....oh happy days.

Without sounding like I'm being facetious- Radio 2?

They play a nice mix of classic rock, modern pop and if you listen to it in the evening, some good, new alternative/ indie stuff. Bit of everything, really- all it's missing is totally mainstream pop like 1D, Jessie J and The Wanted, and urban stuff.

I'm sorry to say that Jessie J and the like are starting to creep onto radio 2. Shame.

Yeah, I take your point, it's just I feel it's all a bit too cardigan and slippers in my mind. That said it's probably my mind rather than R2

True, Capital are driven by profit and I suppose they do what they see fit, and if I don't like it and their shareholders do well that's just the way it is really. I do worry though that they are in danger of getting way too dominant and influential for the general good.

R1 have a remit for 15-29 yr olds, I think, but a recent report, I recall, said they weren't doing very well in that demographic. They have an issue really as with the rise of the web they are having to compete for attention (especially with 15-29yr olds) with you tube etc in a way unimaginable 15 years ago. I still think they are over focussed on "new" "latest" etc etc and it's almost as if any anything a week old is great and a month old isn't. Well that's my (probably jaundiced) view. Shame really 'cos it could be better. That said I'm not in their demographic, so they would have a case to say "tough, go away and listen to something else". Thing is it's often R4, if it's not my own collection, as "music radio" has the problems (for me at least) above.

I'll just shut up rambling and go and sift through me old dusty LP's..........

When you've got some people thinking R1 is trying to be cool and not mainstream enough and others like me who think it's choices (especially when it comes to bands) are too safe and mainstream and boring then you could say they've got things about right. Of course, in trying to provide a bit of everything to appeal to different tastes you do risk not pleasing anyone....but i suppose that's where the specialist shows and stations come in.

Tried 6music? That's what I'd be listening to but I use the Internet to find/listen to music now so I don't really listen to radio any more.

This is Radio 1 in a nutshell. It's just filled with arrogant, pretentious hipsters who care more about being cool than the music.

I think all radio is pretty dreadful though. I haven't listened to it for more than a few minutes at a time (like if I'm in a taxi or a waiting room and it's on) for years. If I did listen to radio, I'd probably be a Radio 2 person, with occasional Radio 4.

The DJs are so poor now (Fearne Cotton ffs ) and although they may be trying to be "cool", the playlisted music certainly isn't.

Radio 1 has always wanted to be new music aimed at younger people ie 15 - 29. If you look at there playlist every week it has a mix of songs weather it's dance, R & B, indie, pop, metal or whatever. They might play some old artist with a new song like Red Hot Chili Peppers. But i don't think they play as much older music in the daytime maybe 1 song from 2002 might crop in an hour. As for request show i bet they didn't want to play Jedward so told people they did not have it.

After all if you requested some Northern soul song from the 60's that Radio 1 could find in the library they might still say we can't play it. I only hear old songs in specialist shows

As for capital radio that is completely a joke for a station as they only care mostly for pop, R & B and dance and if you hear a guitar song it's some Coldplay or script song. Radio 2 play Jessie J and the like if they feel it's for there audience

LOL I am one of the oldies they want to shift to radio 2! But this old bird is not for moving (YET!) I love Chris, Fearne, Scott and Greg and look forward to Nick taking over from Chris. I think he will be good he has a very laid back presenting style a bit like Sarah Cox. I will miss Chris though and his acerbic sense of humour wich so many people didn't get!

Don't you mean Capital FM?

Radio 1 play a variety of music.....I wouldn't call Biffy Clyro, The Vaccines etc 'club bangers'. They play pop and alternative.

They must have been listening after 7.00pm or the new guy who won the comp and is now a DJ at the week-end

Lol!!
Why would you have a station on just because there's no ads and they sometimes play a decent song.
Find a station with no ads that play decent songs more regularly than sometimes

I agree about Capital - awful awful awful!!!
I'm surprised their copy of Jessie J - Domino hasn't worn out.

I like some of the DJ's on Radio 1, too!

I can cope with Scott Mills because he has some natural wit, and Matt Edmondson is good when they allow him to speak.

If I have to hear about Fearne Cotton's pregnancy one more time, however, I'll have a mental breakdown.
