I had the misfortune of listening to Radio 1 the other day. |

Put another station on then. It's not rocket science.

Doesn't sound like Radio 1 at all... they usually play the generic club bangers in the top 10 on repeat.
Have you EVER listened to Radio1? I think you are thinking of CapitalFM. Radio 1 plays all the chart music AS-WELL as new un-heard music, hints of rock, indie and sometimes pop classics. One of the only stations left that DOESN'T play the top 20 on repeat. Quote:
it was on at the gym.
my goodness, what a bizarre mess! who is this station supposed to appeal to?? ![]() i dont quite understand what its supposed to be. is it a mainstream pop station or what? i was in the gym for 2 hours and must have heard one pop song. the rest was just alternative nonsense which has never been in the top40, not has a chance of entering the top 40. infact its almost as if they are trying desperatly to be cool, OR they only want to appeal to 35-50 year olds. kind of reminds me of a dad dancing very badly at a wedding.

Yeah, if you want straight up pop music, Capital is a better option than Radio 1. Radio 1 isn't supposed to play pop muisc, it has to play other genres, whilst it's in Capital's description that it only plays pop.

Radio 1 strikes the right balance between mainstream and up and coming, alternative music in their daytime shows. Just looking at their playlist shows that. I assume the OP was listening at some time after 7pm, seeing as that's when they ditch the majority of the mainstream music - which should maybe give a hint as to the audience they're trying to attract at that time.

Depends what time you were listening to it. It could have been a specialist indie show (presume they still have these)

But even Capital FM has specialists shows at night sometimes, where you hear pretty much nothing from the charts in there. |

The fact that millions of people lap up Radio 1 depresses the sh*t out of me ....just as much as the fact that millions of people lap up Radio 2 ...beyond awful....like having somebody yelling " Idiot " at you.

Well, some evenings Radio 1 just broadcasts the same as Radio 1Xtra I think.
