I just wondered has anyone on there travels has actually used NFC as way of paying for a purchase? Would NFC be on your list of priorities when choosing a new mobile phone? I must admit im quite pleased that my HTC Desire C has NFC but wonder if it will ever get used!

I've used my Barclays contactless card many times to pay but unfortunately there's no app for my S3 to allow me to pay with it yet.

I think it's a good idea but I have to carry my card (as well as other cards, driving license etc) anyway so I may as well just use my card.

Never used it – my debit card does not have it and neither does my phone.

Can’t see any reason I would want it in my phone…I expect my debit card will get it eventually and then I will be able to use it.

i don't have it on my phone or debit card, I would avoid a phone that got it to be honest and hopefully it will never come on my debit card. Halifax don't seem to be in a rush to change it.

i know someone who have got a card that got it and we went into Neros for a coffee and he used it in there. once the unit was pushed to the front of the counter, we was told it is not used very often.

I was pretty surprised to see that the NFC in my nexus 7 can read the chip in my passport.

Aren't those cards RFID and not NFC ?

don't know. but i know my nexus 7 can read it when i hold it under the nfc reader.

I don't have NFC, and don't expect to get a new phone for a year or more. By then I expect NFC will be a requisite for me.


My impression is that it is more configurable when in a phone, because the phone is smarter and has a UI. For example, if they can be configured to make a noise and/or vibrate whenever a transaction is made, it'll be harder for thieves with rogue scanners to steal from them.

then the best way to stop that happening is not to have NFC in the first place.

Techradar tested nfc in shops and places. They said the biggest problem was that shop workers had never heard of being able to pay by phone.

I use NFC on my One X, but not for payment - I just use it for location-based switching.

In my car I have a tag that disables wireless and enabled 3G and Bluetooth; while at work and home I have two tags that do the opposite.

I keep forgetting to add the additional one on my car door, for when I leave the car anywhere else other than home or work.

I have a barclaycard pay tag but never really use that as my main card my American Express gold card and that has contactless, so just use that for any contactless transactions anyway. I wish Google wallet would come here soon, with that you can use any card you want with it (Well, American Express, Visa, Mastercard and Discover (Diners) anyway.

Does the Oyster Card used on London Transport count? If yes, I use it all the time. If no, I've never used it.

If I can get to the point where I don't need to carry my Oyster Card, ATM card and Credit Card, and have everything in my phone, it would be neat, but I'm assuming that I'll end up carrying the phone and the cards all the time, so it is a bit pointless.

Yep - there's more you can do with NFC than just payment - we use it to make it easier to get photos from a phone onto a kiosk for printing. It's a technology that's still evolving, but it's got potential for all sorts of applications.

My Nexus S had NFC, but I never used it. There was nothing to use it with, really.

Ive had my Blackberry Bold 9900 for a year now and never used the NFC feature. I think if the new Iphone has NFC then that may give it a big boost.

Looking at Vodafone website earlier with a friend as they are looking at updating their phone soon. phones we was looking at had no NFC in the specs on the site and yet when we went to the manufacture site they said it had NFC, but they did say in small print that it depended on the country and provider.

So don't Vodafone phones have NFC built in?

Not a problem for me, i would be happy not to have the technology in my phone, but my friend thought differently.

I've used contactless bank cards for a while now and Google Wallet on my phone as well.

I do believe this will catch on, as more stores update their payment card readers. At the moment it's mostly fast food outlets and coffee shops that seem to have the NFC readers.

The integration with mobile devices will be crucial. At the moment, Google Wallet requires you to type your PIN before swiping your phone over the reader. This defeats the object of speed and simplicity somewhat. It really needs to be a Single Sign On with your phone PIN, so when the phone is unlocked, NFC transactions require no additional authorisation.

Hope I can enable my S3 with NFC for my Barclays debit account soon as I don't usually carry round my wallet all the time (just put my card in my pocket when I need it) and it's useful for the times when I forget to do that.

My PayPal debit card has NFC but I don't know anywhere that accepts NFC payments.

Unfortunately the Oyster system isn't compatible with NFC, so you won't be using your phone for it for a good while yet...
