There is a new chippy just opened up the road. I tried it and a portion of fish and chips was close to £4, however the guy gave me a bunch of 'credit crunch' vouchers (looked done on the home PC and photocopied) for fish and chips at £1.99.

At first I thought the credit crunch deal would be a smaller portion but I tried one and there doesn't appear to be anything different about them except the price.

£1.99 for fish and chips, I'm suspicious, should I be? How can you make any profit on that?

There's no such thing as a £1.99 lunch?

Being a new chippy they are probably trying to get the customers in so at £1.99 it will soon do that. Up until recently there was a chippy in Fleetwood selling fish & chips for 99p.

What does it taste like? it could be that River Cobbler that's had all the bad press recently.

I've only ever read anonymous bad comments about it. No test lab had found elevated levels of toxins in it.
I think the bad press started when they started importing it into the US, and American catfish producers started a whispering campaign against it.

Yep, seems like a plan to hook people in at £1.99 and then hike the prices up when they have established a customer base.

Sounds fair to me. It's an introductory offer to get more customers, it won't be permanent.

It's very bland.
But that's the Alaskan pollack. I have heard people say that Atlantic pollack has a much stronger taste.

I think you would know if it was river cobbler. I got some recently and I'm not normally all that fussy about fish even I found it hard going. Ended up covering it in curry sauce to hide the taste.

What taste? I find it as bland as Alaskan pollack. Not a patch on cod, and it needs a lot of vinegar and salt to give it any flavour.

You'd easily be able to tell the difference between cod/haddock and river cobbler/basa.
The texture/flakes is completely different. It's far more dense.

Oh for the love of cod! There's eely nothing fishy going on there. It sounds like a nice promotion to hook in the customers.

This is absolutely no red herring, so skate on down to their plaice and bag yourself some yummy fish.

...OK I'm done.

Herring

OK now I'm really done.

I'm sure it's just a promo. OAP meals are around £3.00 and that's all year round. The chippy might have done a good deal on a bulk order so can afford to sell cheaper and hope the customers come back.

KFC charge nearly £4 for a 2 piece meal, yet my local chicken shop sells it for £2 and neither one is using free range chicken. As long as it tastes good, i'm buying!

I found river cobbler has quite a distinct taste and texture, just not one I liked.

I find it surpising that anything beef based would cost less than a broiler chicken.
