Flash is available for the 7,just not on the play store. Got mine direct from adobe..

I can guarantee that an IPad Mini will be released in November, as my friend works for Apple at the production centre just down the road here in China and has confirmed this.

As it's Android there's ways around it. If you Google you will find how to install Flash. It works perfectly. I'm able to watch the BBC iPlayer. It's just not officially supported. That's the great thing about Android. No great all controlling company can decide "No". The nerds find a way and post their results.

Just to add to this thread, could somebody tell me the advantages or disadvantages of the Google Nexus 7 vs. the Amazon Kindle Fire HD? I'm looking to buy one for myself but can't decide which one to get. (It will only be used for leisure purposes if that helps).

Apple might be playing with theiPad mini to try to hold back sales of the Nexus, Microsoft used to do this with 'vapourware' from a few years ago. pretend you're developing something to try to put people off from buying someone else's product until you eventually kill it off.

To be honest I prefer the Apple OS on my iPad to the Galaxy Tab I have, but prefer Android on phones.

The iPad does work well and I'm not an Apple fan boy but when it came to handing over my own money the iPad did it for me over the Tab which my work supply.

Nexus is closer to an actual computer as it isn't tied to one company. It's quad core, very fast, the operating system is the latest and there will be regular updates. It has access to any of the app markets.

The Fire is cheaper. It's locked into Amazon and their app store but then the reason for buying it is to access Amazon content which means that doesn't matter. It's basically a well priced Amazon tablet for their stuff... don't think of it as an Android tablet.

So it's down to what you want from a tablet.

So, based on that thinking an Apple Mac is not an actual computer?

Surely you can buy software from places other than Apple on a Mac? I've never used one but I can't imagine it being locked down like that.

Yes, Macs aren't locked down and you can installed software from anywhere.

When I said 'tied to' I mean the device is locked to a company rather than it's 'only made by'. Sorry if I wasn't clear.

You can do that on the Nerxus 7. Just download the "Nexus media importer" app from the Play store use an OTG cable (around £1 from Amazon etc) to connect your USB stick, SD card or whatever. I have all my music on a 64 GB USB stick and can access all of it at anytime on the Nexus 7 this way.

you need an ipad, or a bit of patience. Sky haven't been the quickest at getting out updates, but have assured us they're working on a compatible version. Remains to be seen whether it is released before the ipad mini though!

Also, the Fire lacks a GPS, [accelerometer *], and magnetometer (a deal breaker for me)... but it does have an HDMI output and the option of more memory.

* Actually it seems implausible that it would lack that, but I can't be arsed to check.

so the accelerometer is used to tell which way up it is and switch from portrait to landscape, and possibly also assist with navigation, but what's the magentometer used for?

Compass apps, and augmented reality stuff (so it knows which way its facing)? Surprised why it might be a deal breaker for someone, but happy to be educated...

Oh, just because these are things I wanted in a tablet. I've started taking my Nexus in my rucksack on mountain biking trips to record my route, and when I work out how to get the open MTB maps into a suitable app, I'll be making use of that too. It was the lack of GPS that was the real deal breaker, but you might as well have a compass too - it means maps will be correctly aligned when you aren't moving, and is also good for being able to hold the thing up to the night sky and get a star map in the right place (augmented reality, as you say). It's too useful not to have at such a modest price, in my opinion. Your mileage (and indeed your direction) may vary.

It occurs to me I might be muddling up accelerometer and gyroscope. Pretty sure the Nexus has both, but the kindle probably only has an accelerometer. I really should have checked the specs before posting!

It has an ambient light sensor, accelerometer and gyroscope.

But a main off putting ting is that the 7" version is last years chipset.
Lack of GPS is stupid too. However it would look decent value if it wasnt for the Nexus.

For a big indoor tablet I noticed CPW had the Archos 101 G9 10.1" tablet for £150 in store.

Whats open MTB?

I have Orux maps for the Open cycle maps overlay of OpenStreetMap. There is also the Sustrans app too.

I was referring to openmtbmap.org. I've started playing with the maps on my PC using QLandkarte GT, and they look pretty good. So now I just need to get the UK one installed on my Nexus. I've already played around with Navfree with the normal street mapping, and that seems pretty good, but I don't yet know if adding extra maps to that is a good idea (or easy to do), or whether a more specialist app would be better. Early days.

I'll take a look at the stuff you mention.

Even if it does appear, I can't see it being £250. iPhones cost more than twice the much.
