Thing is that the iphone5/iOS6 damp squibs suggest that Apple are almost at the end of the line for innovation and features, they've got some brand loyalty to milk yet, but really the only aspect they've got to play with to ensure large sales is price. They're going to have to bring it in relatively cheaply compared to what they might have charged a couple of years ago, otherwise they're finished.

Or else they are finished? So the makers of the best selling smartphone and tablets of all time are almost finished unless the mythical iPad mini is cheap?

Looks like it, unless they come up with some new ideas or start making washing machines soon! Just look at how Nokia once ruled the mobile industry. Past performance is no guarantee of future product sales in these sectors! Cheap ipad minis is the only thing that will give the brand a couple of years extra life.

i think the pricepoint will be interesting. if they can bring it in at the £150-£160 mark, they'd potentially put a huge dent in the android tablet market.

I think if they did that (which personally I don’t think they will) they would really take a huge chunk out of Android Tablet sales.

i don't think they will either because they know they can set pretty much any price they want and people will pay it.

Apple have no desire to be seen as cheap, or even "affordable". Completely goes against how they position themselves in the market.

It would also put a huge dent in Apple's own iPod Touch market. Realistically I reckon it will be priced between the iPod Touch and the current iPad, if the Mini ever materialises.

They sent themselves very nearly into oblivion in the mid nineties.

It was only Jobs and Ives (designer) that rescued them.

What happened to the original Apple, and the likes of Psion, Nokia, RIM, all show that Apple cannot rest on their laurels for a moment.

Ipad Mini pricing is going to be absolutely key to keeping them in the market for a couple more years until some fresh innovations come up to keep them going.

If they set the price too low it affects the brand though - Apple are able to charge more because they have the brand that goes with it.

That would be interesting. Plus I wonder how the people who dismissed the Nexus out of hand with "if you pay cheap you get cheap" will rationalise that!

They'd probably say "Well it's apple, so it can't be cheap"

I think the Touch is probably aimed more at the younger end of the market, but it's a good point about it potentially harming those sales though.

I suppose it'll come down to what Apple's attitude towards the tablet market is. If the Mini is priced upwards of £200 quid, then I'd say they're probably happy to just let things be. If they do bring it in around the £150 mark, they clearly want the lion's share of the market overall.

Well I'll be darned.

Tech review sites etc have almost pretended that there is no GPS on the Nexus so my expectation was that the Mini would simply have no GPS.
As many of their developers got IO6 in advance it might well be that the Mini does have GPS.
That silence is as likely down to those new maps.

But I'd still say Mini for games, Nexus for everything else.

Mini had better be available in a with-GPS variant, even if it's at a £30-£40 surcharge over basic models. It's just another standard chip on the board these days. If Apple really are bloody-minded enough to deliberately leave something like GPS out of the mini they will deserve to go down.

They probably will leave it out. They left it out of the iPad 2.
