Don't know how this popped up in my head but I'm trying to find out whether or not there were two versions of the Macarena in the charts at the same time. I'm sure there was but I can't find evidence of it. There are two versions on the internet Los del mar and los del rio and I have visions of myself going out as a teenager and buying both versions at the same time.

There was one with just the old blokes singing the choruses and bridges between music bits, and one with a generic Eurotart singing verses in between those, as far as I can remember. I'm most familiar with the 'just the old blokes' version.

But there wasn't a 'which one will chart higher' kind of thing?

That song was pretty crap but it will always be ruined even more by the image of a line of fat girls 'doing the macarena' at the back of the school disco.

I haven't been able to shake that image in over 15 years

I can't stand it. Makes me cringe every time I hear it.

mainly for holiday memories.

funny isnt it, how a crap song can hold some nostalgia worthiness if it can remind you of a happy event...

I went on a family holiday to Ibiza that year and couldn't escape the thing!!

Version-wise, I really don't know how I know this, but here goes:

The 'Los Del Rio' version was the official one, as seen on the music video and the one that got to #2 in the UK. Originally completely in Spanish, the worldwide release added said-Eurotart woman singing in the verses.

'Los Del Mar' copied the original, non-Eurotart version (with just the two guys singing in Spanish the whole way through) and was released in the UK, but only got to #43 here. It did, however, appear on that summer's 'Now That's What I Call Music' album (34) either as a mistake or because it was cheaper to license, I dunno.

Funnily enough, in Australia both Rio's Eurotart and Mar's non-Eurotart version were popular enough that Los Del Rio were #1 and Los Del Mar were #2!
