I think Rebecca Ferguson, Little Mix and One Direction definitely have the potential to last.

Leona Lewis will last depending on how her next album goes IMO. She's cracked the states and a lot of other places but they don't seem to be helping her progress. Amelia is a possibility. Unsure about Olly, however is face does seem to be everywere you go. Joe seems to have cracked a market in the opera scene so I think he'll be ok but not as big as the others.

Cher Lloyd will last in USA but I don't think she'll stay big in the UK. People really can't seem to warm back to her. Eventually I think USA will get bored of her but Idk.

Marcus, Misha, Matt (curse of the M's) I think have had their time now and I don't think any of them will be able to redeem themselves. Misha could have been great sadly. Think Alexandra will be a gonner soon too. One of those people who you only ever see on the likes of gaming talkshows etc. Like Jedward. JLS will probably be around the UK for a while but I don't really see a buzz about them anymore.

I don't think Little Mix will last very long, personally.

I think it's really hard to predict...did anyone expect Olly to do so well, especially with his second album.

Also you need the right material to have longevity.

Agree shuana.

Groups are tricky. You have more than 1 person. They only last when group members stay focused and it doesn't happen often.

I agree, with most groups, especially manufactured ones, there always comes a time when one member decides to try for a solo career and this is usually the beginning of the end in most cases.

Personally. I dont think any will last that long,

If they were that good then record companies/agents would have already picked them up. Manufactured pop stars from a TV reality show generally have a short shelf life and I suspect that in 2 years time we will be having this same conversation and the current crop are unlikely to be around.

Maybe One Direction if they retain their teenage fanbase and possibly Mischa B (who may be the best bet to crack the US), but the rest I dont think are good enough.

I guess it depends what you mean by lasting. If you mean who is going to stay successful in single and album sales, then it depends on too many different factors and is almost impossible to predict. Who would have thought Alexandra would be where she is right now even going back a year? The music industry is fickle.

But 'lasting' can take on other meanings. Someone like Rebecca, for example, might not always sell loads of albums but she's proven herself to be a competent songwriter so may well go down that avenue in the future. I personally think Aiden's debut album shows a talent beyond his years and whilst it has dramatically underperformed, that sort of potential can lead to other things. It's about revising expectations of these acts and not getting hung up on the notion that the only kind of success worth bragging about is having number one hit after number one hit.

Depends what you mean by last, and whether it implies national or global celebrity status. There's Matt for instance, who hasn't as far as I know received much international attention and who may or may not be fast shrinking back to being the darling of his fanbase and forgotten by the public at large. So his next album may sell 200k or 20k, but either way he'll probably last because he was already out there lasting when selling 20k of an album would have been a pipedream. Most of the musicians whose work I love will never have sold 20k of anything, but they've lasted five or ten or twenty or forty years just getting on and doing what they do.

Leona Lewis has lasted a while already, but on a diminishing scale. Olly has shown there was an Olly Murs-shaped hole in the market, and I think he'll be around a very long time, though the emphasis may shift away from his singing. Kind of a latter-day Des O'Connor maybe. 1D may be huge internationally for a few years and probably won't go away after that. Take That Mk. II. I think Cher Lloyd may be big for a very long time, but I have trouble imagining how she'll sound five or ten years from now. That pleases me. Aiden doesn't seem about to trouble the charts much, but I hope he stays in music. I've little doubt Lucy Spraggan will last, but more in the way Jake Thackray did, she's not going to be the next Beyonce.

It's hard of course for any of us to see beyond hoping or expecting our own favourite performers to last, because for the most part we can't quite see why some of the others ever had any popularity in the first place...

EDIT: and if elly's post had been there when I started those musings I wouldn't have repeated as much as I did of what she's just said

Jedward are still going strong after 3 years. They have just released their third album which went to number 1 in Ireland like the previous 2. This week they are filming a second series of their Irish kids TV show "Jedward's Dream Factory".

They also have a show on CBBC "Jedward's Big Adventure", another on Channel 5* "Jedward's Weird Wild World", and for the third year running they will be starring in their own panto in Dublin. This year it's "Jedward and the Magic Lamp".

They may not be everyone's cup of tea, but they certainly have staying power!

i agree... especially in the difficulty (!!!) in seeing beyond the hoping and expecting that our own favourite performers will last.

They are also breaking the Asian market..with Young Love topping the charts all over ..they recently visited Singapore and were literally mobbed by fans

They are just about to release a new single called Luminous that has already had positive reviews from DJs and music critics alike and even went to number 2 on an American radio chart when they DJ decided to add it to his playlist

Agreed, I think people are selling Little Mix short (no pun intended to the girls). Just because their debut album hasn't arrived yet doesn't mean they won't last long. It can only depend on the fanbase and Little Mix are gaining this by the bucket-load, we shouldn't be jumping to conclusions just yet...it's best to wait until the debut album comes in and where it charts at.

This is true I remember this forum after series 6 ended there were prediction threads such as "Where is the finalists be a year from now" and many users said about Olly "He will be at Butlins or back in the call center" I wasn't a fan of his at all when he was on X Factor but even his critics have to admit he has done very well for himself and he has done better than any of his critics said he would have done.
