Amazon Kindle Fire HD first impressions
Stilian
11-09-2012
I did my research on the Amazon Kindle Fire HD as I am looking for new tablet and I think it is a good device for the money, especially the 8.9-inch display model. Still my personal favorite is the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 which has better specs than the Kindle Fire HD but the price difference is huge as the Kindle Fire HD will be much cheaper ($200 for the 7-inch model http://forconsumers.blogspot.com/201...ch-tablet.html ). I am still not sure which one I will buy but the Amazon Kindle Fire seems to be a good alternative to most Android tablets as it fast, has great display, connectivity and multimedia features.

It all depends what you will use it for. They are both good machines but you pay extra to have full access to all the apps on Google Play rather than being locked onto Amazon's store.

The 3G on Galaxy Tab 7.7 is big advantage over the choice of having only WiFi or WiFi and 4G for the 8.9-inch Kindle Fire HD. That is why I think Amazon tablets are great for multimedia lovers but if you need to do some work on the go one would be better with higher spec device like the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 tablet.

No SD card is big issue for me. I don't think it multimedia is any special that you don't get on most tablet though I have yet to hear the supposed high end speakers.

AFAIK, in the UK they are just marketing a 7" model so I am not sure were the 8.9" model is you are looking at ?

If you are looking at 8.9" model then you might as well go for a 10" of which there are several very good ones.

That is a good point, I myself think that the SD card slot and the 3G connection are worth the extra money spend for the more expensive and capable tablet.
There is going to be a Kindle Fire HD 8.9" with 4G LTE Wireless but I think it is for US customers only, anyways it is also a bit too expensive (around $500).

I know the 8.9" device has been announced for US at $300 without LTE or over $500 with. But I guess we will have to wait until UK release to see specification and pricing.

The 16GB version of the Kindle Fire HD is offered at Amazon UK for £159.00, no 8.9-inch Kindle Fire yet.

I quite like the dolby speakers on the Kindle HD. Good idea seeing it's a tablet designed for Amazon movies and music.

If you did you research Stilian you will find you are in the UK and the good 8.9" is not available in the UK.

If you did you research you would see Stillian lists that he lived in the EU so may not live in the UK at all.

Must be Scottish then.

With two extremely different HD's I did not want to just bash the dated 7" design.

Ahah, I appreciate your sense of humor guys, but lets focus on the tablet I think it is possible that Amazon launches the bigger version of the Kindle Fire HD in the UK as well, if not we'll have to get it from US

The 7" screen is very decent.

Not a big deal considering the cheaper iPad 2 screen was always good bit worse than the iPad 1.
If you read between the lines the Nexus screen also beats the iPad 2.

This all of course completely ignores lighting conditions, environment usage etc etc.

From the specs, it appears the 8.9" has not got the same screen technology as 7" version.

On the Kindle Fire HD can you download Android apps at all?

I am considering getting one. I know, I know I have always said that I think tablets are pretty pointless but I have to admit I am very curious about the Fire

Hope someone can clarify...

If I had a harddrive full of movies and TV programs, could I move and watch some .avi files on to a kindle fire? Or will it be like an iPad which only plays Apple bought movies?

The Fire will support multiple formats, there is a list at the bottom of this page.

I think you'd be better off with something other than the Kindle HD if you want to play your own stuff. It's very much a device designed for Amazon content.

The iPad will play anything that's .mp4, regardless of whether they were bought from iTunes or not.

There are also various different apps available if you have videos in other formats, such as .avi or .mkv.

The Kindle Fire HD is a tablet PC, the Kindle Touch 3G is an eReader - different types of product.

Yes, there are plenty of video players like the Azul Media Player available for the iPad. I think that the Kindle Fire HD is also very good for video playback, it is advertised mostly as great multimedia device after all, not a business one.
