Kanye Storms the Stage and Interrupts Taylor Swift (2009)

Toffler: “There’s no way any of us could have predicted that — we didn’t orchestrate it. He came with a bottle of alcohol, so he was in a festive mood to begin with. But we all were in shock in the [production] truck when he walked up on stage and took the mic from Taylor. I remember turning to one of the producers and going, ‘Do we not have security?’ [But] we don’t put those big bulky guys on camera in front of the talent. Maybe this guy thought Kanye belonged on the stage.

I said to our line producer, ‘You need to go talk to Kanye and probably have him exit the building, and I will go deal with Taylor.’ And she was about to perform right after that break! She was a champ. I would be lying if I said she and her mom weren’t crying when I saw them, but she pulled it together. This was one of the most absurd VMA moments for me, having to talk to her and her mom, and they’re crying and upset, and this was her first time on the VMAs, and she had been used to working on country shows with polite artists. This was a little bit more chaotic than she was used to. And then I walked back behind the stage to find Beyoncé crying about the incident. Ultimately I talked to her and her dad and then went back to Taylor after her performance, and an hour later Beyoncé brought Taylor back out so she could have her moment.

But the incident made taylor a lot of money and helped her achieve the stardom she now has, maybe taylor set it up with west.
Whatever... taylor has gone on to be one of the biggest females on the planet whilst kayne west just crawed back under the rock he crawled out of to perform such a mean stunt.

I don't know if anyone at the Video Music Awards knew but Kanye did have prior experience of doing that at events. A few years before at the MTV: Europe Music Awards he stormed the stage when some obscure european group beat "Touch The Sky" for some award and he moaned how his video had Pamela Anderson while the poor guys behind were waiting to give their acceptance speach.

All that being said the moment with Kanye and Taylor was the last time anything at the VMAs was worth talking about. Controversial things happened all the time in it's heyday but now anything like that is quashed. Look at the performances, at one one point acts stepped up their game in some respect playing at the VMAs now it's just treated by acts as just another award show, another notch on the promotion ladder. No different to playing any other TV show, just a bigger venue that's all.

Since 2009, it's been difficult for most pop stars to do "interesting" performances anymore, because they get accused of copying Lady Gaga. But before 2009 it was more interesting because everybody could do whatever they wanted, but now you pretty much have to stand there and sing (Adele style), with no interesting dance routines or costumes, or else a Twitter war breaks out, with millions of monsters accusing you of being a copy-cat.

It'll be a few years until the interesting performances can make a return I think.

I think Kanye gets a little bit singled out though, since hip hop artists are always doing things like this at award shows. It's pretty common, I remember a similar thing happening with 50Cent and Evanescence back when I was younger, for example.
