ASDA are a tragic company to work for. You've had a lucky escape.

You still have to be able to count to work for supermarkets, because there are loads of grumpy old people (like me) who refuse to use the self-service checkouts. We prefer to go to a manned (or perhaps its "personned" nowadays) till and speak to a human.
Is self service checkout common now in the UK? I saw it in SF, and we have it in a few stores here in Norway, but still not too much

I use it at the library. Very easy.

Back in the days you just wrote your name on a card that was in the book you wanted to borrow and put the card in a box, and then left. haha. That wasnt Oslo though

Yeah basically every store has it now.

I've always wondered how easy it is to scan something really cheap and put something of a similar weight in your bag

It used to be amazingly easy to shoplift using the self service checkouts. I know two people who did just that. One used to get his booze on a buy one get one free basis whilst the other had the cheapest weekly shop I've ever seen. I know they tightened up on procedures but it's still do-able if the store is really busy apparently.

My claim to fame is I was sacked by Asda. benny is right, they were shits to work for.

Ah OK. Seems to be easy to shoplift, but the same can be said about "normal" stores as well....

I've always thought how easy it would be. Everytime I go into Morrisons I always put too much on the weigh thing after I have scanned it. So about 3 times in one shop it goes 'unexpected item in the bagging area' the women just comes over and presses a button and it stops.

I don't think I would have the balls to try and trick it though, I would look so obvious and probably be bright red haha

I always have the problem that it goes off as soon as I arrive at the darn thing.

I usually have my own bags and if I put it down on the scales it sets off. I try to avoid them when possible

They delivered the bad news via the phone. The feed back was that I looked uncomfortable and lacked eye contact, no idea how they came up with that, they went on to compare asda to a stage, the only stage I can compare it to is the Jeremy vile stage.
It seems to be very odd feedback, but I understand this was a group interview, which means you are being compared with those around you as the first way of reducing the applicants. I don’t think that method is very fair, but with CVs all looking the same nowadays, employers have to have some method of reducing the applicants – that’s why they give you the assessment tests.

The bigger the organisation, the more box-ticking you have to do at the first interview, as you are often in front of the HR department or even an external agency, and not those you are going to be working with. I remember going to one interview process at a hotel where we were led in groups of eight to a line of interviewers. I started to describe who I was and my experience, when I realised that the girl was just nodding, and putting the occasional tick on the paper. I fished out the original job advert from my papers and scanned it quickly again. Then I said, “I am sorry I have been waffling, let me describe my current experience again concisely” – and then mentioned every buzz word on the advert. She was ticking boxes so fast she had to ask me to slow down. I got to the second stage of the interview but I walked out – if they couldn’t be bothered to read my CV, I couldn’t be bothered to work for them.

Nowadays, I sometimes have to do interviews, and getting an idea of what the candidate is like can be difficult when you are dealing with introverted computer geeks. Sometimes you have to drag the information out of them - in computer software the quiet ones often make the best developers.

But often your first aim is to get through the first stages of the interview process and get in front of the people who are actually doing the hiring. And that means being interested in the job, and looking and coming across as a ‘can do’ sort of person. And saying the buzz words.

I went to Sainsburys today and was going to use them but then knew after talking about them something would go wrong. So I just went to the miserable checkout women.

The more shops I go to in Manchester the more I realise how good my customer service is. Went to morrisons the other day and all the check out women said was. 'Just put your card in' and 'bye' not even a hint of smile

You live in the wrong city. The Sainsbury's in Central Cardiff have three older people working the proper checkouts - they are always extremely nice and helpful.
