BBC LR Evening show winners

Does anyone know who won the bid? Pitches were on Monday, no white smoke yet officially though.

When will the changeover take place? I heard September- but, surely not!

January 2013. Last regular shows before Christmas I think?

DQF has already started to bite with BBC London's The Scrum already being axed and BBC Newcastle's overnight show replaced by 5 Live.

Here's the timetable and brief for the commission (which says Friday is decision day.. although of course you'd imagine some progress would have been made by now!):

Radio Today is saying the winner will be announced next week: http://mad.ly/5ba413

Also in our diary is the announcement on who will produce the new England-wide BBC Local Radio evening show. Expect that news early next week.

Would be good but doubt it!
reposted from the 2 extra thread reguarding why Roger Day did not bid!

Quote:
• It will be speech-led (a minimum of 60 per cent).
Currently Roger plays a lot of old and new songs not played much but
Quote:
• Music will be based on the current local radio core playlist with an increased bias towards music from past decades.
So less chance to play music not often heard or from old or new artists playing new music so the new show will be sadly significantly different to Roger's current show format. It could be a vast majority of Roger's existing listeners move to listen to his new "uncool radio" on the internet.

In some ways Mark Goodier's Smooth show is similar to Roger's being music based with some rarely played tracks and some new music, so he may also not fit well with the restrictions placed on the new evening show.

Looks like January will be a sad month for many current BBC LR evening listeners in the South!

Wouldn't be a surprise. "Don't scare the horses" was the background to the brief. Mark would be a good choice. Wouldn't upset those stations that have large non sport evening audiences.

"The syndicated BBC Local Radio evening show contract has been awarded to a new company set up by former BBC executive Matthew Bannister.

Bannister and his partner former BBC Asian Network Head of Programmes, Husain Husaini have set up Wire Free Productions and this is their first major production."

Congrats to Wire Free Productions. I'm sure nearer the time we'll find out who the new presenter is although I doubt it'll be Bannister.

This looks a bit fishy. A big new commission is given to a brand new company, registered less than a week ago, and run by two former BBC executives....? I wonder who else applied for it and whether they were given a fair hearing.

Can we kiss goodbye to BBC LR - BBC introducing?

Shame for local talent if no radio stations exist to give local music an outlet.

No. My understanding is that BBC Introducing will continue. Different stations run this strand at different times. The idea, as I understand it, is that BBC introducing will have a common (ish) timeslot across the country, and be more widely promoted.

Erm - I'm pretty sure that recently-departed BBC Exec John Ryan also pitched for the gig. And his company has hardly been going for decades.

Its interesting. Out of £150k budget they will have fund production, guest payments plus all of the other overheads that go with it. If MB isn't presenting they will have to do that work themselves other wise I can't see how it will pay. Neither HH or MB have actually produced anything for years so it will be a "back to the floor" moment for them

They have no other projects lined up at the moment but HH most recent job (post Asian Network) was.... as a BBC commisioning editor...

The £150k guide price didn't include presenter fees. Or news/travel/jingles/music scheduling/reporting.

Yes but if MB isn't presenting he will have to draw a salary from the £150k

Ah.. OK. Get that.

However, if he's not 'back to the floor', he should only be expecting to slice a profit rather than a salary.

Do we have a breakdown of what the BBC will actually supply? We know that regional news and travel for each LR region will continue as now during the new networked show, so those people will be contracted as per now.

If Bannister is presenter, he'll need a producer and will they require an editor?

Not much profit, he must have more projects in the pipeline, which is why HH working for as BBC commissioning editor is interesting.

Ther brief talked about the "best of LR journalism" which will involve liaising with 39 stations. prob will need a SBJ Bj and ba.

15 hours a week, 50% speech, quite a lot of work. .

Except that the BBC will be funding senior editorial liaison, presumably to gather said material. Then there'll be tie ins to The One Show, Springwatch, Stargazing Live and almost any other "factual" show you care to mention.

If Bannister runs some of it along the lines of a phone in, that will account for a chunk of speech.

Sure, it's a big ask but I think the £150k budget is indicative of an indy proving it can run things efficiently.
