Should there be a fifth judge?
The guest judges helped spice the auditions up a little. Come the live shows the comments of the 4 mentor judges are always going to be predictably weighted in their act's favour. A fifth judge, a guest, different one each week, would be impartial.
I realise that if 5 judges commented on every act's performance it might delay things too much, so the solution might be to ban the mentors from judging their own acts. All they ever give is a simperingly defensive "don't listen to them, you were wonderful" platitude anyway. In what would have been their air time the guest judge would comment instead, while sat in the middle, so that each time a performance ended only 4 out of 5 judges would comment, 3 critical rivals and 1 independent guest. Having 5 judges, all able to take part in bottom-2 decisions would also remove the boredom of it going to the public vote every time, defeating the purpose of the sing-off. |

Just for deadlock there should be a hawkeye/third umpire type thing. We see the performances again in slow motion with mind-boggling graphics and lines and stuff.

I think they could get through an additional comment, especially since the finalists have been reduced from 16 back to 12. The only problem could be that we would inevitably get some ridiculous temporary judges, Sinitta would be a cert, just today Simon has suggested that some from One Direction would make good judges and what is the betting that we would get the same people as we got for this year's audition stage with Robbie Williams, a few JLS and Westlife members thrown in for good measure. |

I like the idea of one guest Judge each week but I don't think the Guest Judge be able to judge the outcome of the bottom 2 if it did happen infact I would say they should only be there for the saturday show.

The panel sometimes refer to the audience as 'the fifth judge'. Ugh. The audience as one judge would say things like "Oh my god, you're sooo fit/that sob story was AMAZING! It's a yes from me!".

No thanks.
Someone being paid a crazy amount to read out some scripted comments... already got four of those. |

I don't think it would make a difference, if the 4 judges were honest then the right acts who deserved to get through based on their performances would always get through. I still haven't got over how Simon saved Jedward over Lucie Jones after ridiculing them prior to that each week. The judges are playing a game, simple as that.

I don't believe a 5th judge would be impartial. Everyone has favourites.
And even if they were impartial people on here would accuse them of favouritism. I don't think it would work for those reasons. |

Louis for a start always has a little favourite or two from a category other than his own. Not necessarily. They could still play favourites, whether the 'winning judge' mantle was in the offing or not. And if nothing else, it would be fodder for the resident conspiracy theorists, who'd doubtlessly deem the 5th judge a producer's puppet. I think having mentors support, praise or defend their acts is a vital part of the show. Cowell won't give up the column inches deadlock can provide in a hurry. But even if that was ever dispensed with, they'd only find another means of stringing things out virtually until the credits roll. |

i think there should be an odd number of judges to eliminate deadlock and make a decisive vote, but i was fine with there being just 3, and i've hated the guest judges so far this year. there's no stability on the panel, and therefore no chemistry. and that's with editing....i think it would be disasterous in the lives.
i admit i do like the IDEA of an impartial judge, but like someone else said before me, to be impartial is nigh on impossible, as everyone will always have their favourites. alternatively, get rid of the judges vote all together and have the impartial judge the voting public. then they'd REALLY be the 5th judge. lowest votes = you're out!! |

I'd prefer 3. 4 doesn't work because we don't always get a majority, and 5 is too many.

They should bin off Nicole Shitsinger and go down to 3 (replacing Tulisa with Mel B in the process)
It works so much better. |

It works so much better. Mel B brought a lot to the show that Tulisa doesn't. I think after 1 series of Tulisa you just feel pretty 'blah' about her the 2nd year. In all honesty, I'm over the x-factor. I know people will be like "well don't watch it if you don't like it" but it's not that I don't like it, ofcourse i do. But it's gone a little stale. I do miss the Simon, Cheryl, Dannii, Louis panel still. I'd even be happy for a Nicole out, Sharon in scenario |

I think a fifth judge would liven up the show a little, providing they choose the right person. It would have to be Mel B for me because she can spice it up a little and the more judges, the more democratic it is and potentially difficult for the contestants. The only thing is, I can't help feeling that the Britiish public are now just terminally fed up of the show.

I don't like the idea. They'd have to find time within the show to squeeze a fifth judge's long winded comments into. And since the VTs are so important so we can see all the hardships our beloved contestants have overcome in the past week, it'd probably come out of actual singing time.
