What Apple should have announced

I think its far to say that a lot of iPhone owners are disappointed with the lack of new featues anounced with the iPhone 5. To me, this phone is much more like an iPhone 4ss (or 4t if you like). I'm interested to know what people would have liked.

This is my personal list of what Apple could have selected from to keep its customers happy

NFC
Fingerprint unlock
Wireless charging
3D Camera & Display
FM Radio

Please keep this thread on message. Theres more than enough threads to cover the Android v Apple arguments already. Thanks

Just out of interest how would you implement Fingerprint Unlock in a phone while trying to keep it small?

Personally it wouldn't be something I would be interested in as it seems more of an extra gimmick to go wrong.

NFC definitely, it's about time we moved forward with contactless payment via a phone.

FM radio - no use 3G or LTE to stream in much better quality, FM is old fashioned and rubbish on small devices like phones.

Wireless charging would have been nice.

New colours would have been very nice, yellow, red, etc

3D camera, boring, gimmick

Fingerprint unlock - can't see that looking decent on the device

They could have replaced the Apple logo with a cut out through to a finger print reader. Obviously it would add to the size and the weight of the device but it would look decent and still have the Apple logo.

Would make the phone far too big. Why go to the expense of having a fingerprint reader when a password does the trick.

Its also amazing how quick a password or pin actually is.

For example I quickly ditched Face Unlock on my S2 because for the time it takes to turn on - boot camera and recognise face, it was just as quick (if not quicker) to put a pin in.

There is a very interesting article on slashgear called Why the iPhone 5 needs no NFC, wireless charging or localized haptic feedback.

It very much reads of a oh shit Apple didnt include them, what do I say. I know I'll say, the iPhone doesnt need them anyway and my fellow bloggers will think its a great article.

Agree thats what should have been on the phone but they will drip feed them over the years with the 5S,6,6S etc etc....

A fingerprint sensor wouldn't add much to the size of the device, the sensors are only about 10mm wide by 3mm long and could be put on the side or top of the phone.

I genuinely don't know what else people want from a phone. We can suggest things until the cows come home, but the phone is what it is.

I must admit though, a FM radio would be good. I used to like listening to Moyles in the morning on my way to work but doing through 3G just eats up too much data.

Moyles is leaving anyway so not really an issue for me anymore!

NFC - For sure. This should have been included, if not for contactless payments, but for any number of additional uses (smartcard logons to workstations/photocopiers, etc). It's difficult to understand why Apple didn't include this - Passbook is the ideal container for it.

Fingerprint unlock - I was secretly hoping for this one, integrated with the home button though. I would guess that this would come with the next iPhone - Apple's rush to buy Authentec must have been for something.

Wireless charging - I can't really see the point of it rather than a second or so saved plugging a charger in or docking it. If you've got to place the phone on a pad to charge it, that pad is connected to a power source, you might as well just have the Lightning cable there instead.

3D display and camera - 3D is dying out again, Apple would have to put two cameras in the back of the unit, compromise on screen quality to enable glassesless 3D, and I reckon that 3D will subside again within the next couple of years.

FM Radio - I can see why people still want this, and the wireless chip apparently does support it, however, if the carriers brought back Unlimited data packages, you could stream your radio stations over 3G.

I was a bit underwhelmed by the keynote, however, this phone isn't aimed at me.

My personal view is that these phones are on a 2 year cycle, owing to the length of contracts.

This phone is 4 times faster, and has many more features than the iPhone 4, whose users are coming up to the end of their contracts. I'm an iPhone 4S user, my contract expires next year, so I'm expecting a bit of a jump from the 4S to the 5S/6.

It's not enough of an upgrade at the moment from the 4S, but is enough of an upgrade from the 4. Same as the 3GS was a good upgrade from the original, the 4 from 3, 4S from 3GS, etc etc.

I don't really care about any of the things you mentioned there. Me, I'd just like a better assistant (Siri is *ok* but not customizable).

That's exactly the main problem with wireless charging. You still have to plug the wireless charge in somewhere. With just a normal cable you can charge the phone in the car, at work, off a computer etc. It's much more flexible.

As for the other suggestions, I doubt many would be bothered in a 3D camera or fingerprint unlocking. A radio might be nice.

I think a lot of people are still concerned about transaction security issues with NFC and also personal safety in terms of everyone being able to see you're carrying a nice expensive muggable smartphone. Unless NFC really takes off in the next 12 months (and I doubt it will) then they haven't missed the boat just yet.

Thing is I think smart phones have pretty much got everything now. There isn't much to get excited about any more.

They all look pretty much the same, they all do pretty much the same thing and cost the same amount.

It's a phone and it's a small computer and it's a camera. There isn't a lot else you can do with it except make it thinner, lighter, faster, have more battery life and every 12 months make the corners a bit more or less rounded, make the case out of something different, make one bit shiny that was matt or vice versa.

What Apple should've done was not call it the iPhone 5, given it's the 6th model of iPhone they've launched.

The phone was aimed at me. I had an iphone 4 and upgraded in May this year. I knew at the time that whilst I'd found the phone highly useable over the two years that the iphone 5 would not have what I was looking for in a phone for the next two years. I upgraded to the note instead. The announcement yesterday showed me that I was right to not wait for the iphone 5.

Im surprised it wasn't called the New iPhone in line with the 3rd generation iPad. Perhaps they didn't want Trading Standards breathing down their neck.

Why would they? Surely they can call the product what they want, it is the new iPhone.

Nobody is questioning their right to name their products. Makes the announcement of the iPad 3 being the New iPad an anomaly that's all. As for trading standards, that was a joke, as for being new, that's almost a joke too.

Hmm... tricky! Could have had one of those virtual keyboard projectors for proper typing. A video projector may be like that Samsung projector phone? How about ultra efficient solar charging?!! But that would be mroe a tech demonstration phone for geeks rather than a mass market product.

You don't need to give each phone a new number each time one comes out unless you want to pedantic...and what about Windows 2000 there have never been 1,999 previous versions

Of course not but once you start a nomenclature with a certain internal logic, to suddenly ignore that raises questions.

The original iPhone was called the iPhone because it was the only iPhone, that name made sense.
The iPhone 3G was the version of the iPhone that supported 3G, that name made sense.
The 3GS was a sped-up version of the 3G, that made sense.
The 4 was the 4th model of iPhone announced, that made sense.
The 4S was a sped-up version of the 4, that made sense.
The 5 is the 6th model of iPhone announced, explain how that makes sense?

That is the most pathetic attempt at an argument I have ever seen.
