I'm making a heart-shaped walnut victoria sponge cake, but it's still not cooked through after 35 minutes in the oven(skewer is till wet when inserted) so I've put it back in the oven with some foil covering the cake. Is this the right thing to do to avoid my cake from burning before it's cooked ?

Well its best of a good job. Next time line the tin with double grease proof. For fruit cakes I use newspaper on the outside tied with string.

It should be ok for now. If you are concerned then wrap brown paper round the outside and about six inches higher than the cake and tie with string.

Happy baking pal.

It finally cooked after 50 minutes. But it hasn't risen very much. This was a practice for when I make it for someone else. On the real one, I'll do two and sandwich them together
