By the way, did anybody catch Wrighty admit on air today that some people find him irritating
I nearly fell off my chair, that must be the first time I've heard him saying anything I agree with

Ken Bruce and Steve Wright do just fine thanks. If you don't like them listen to one of the many other stations available.

I have been listening to both DJs for 20 odd years - even today when I live the oppisite side of the world thanks to the interweb.

I find Steve Wrights show irratating, maybe the format is a bit cheesy, Love The Show Steve (not really).
Ken Bruce keeps going well as it is simple. no zoo formats, just Ken, music, chat with travel lady and news presenter and two daily music features, Popmaster and Tracks of My Years. Throw in a single or album of the week, and it works. Simple, unchallenging, get on with your work show.
You are right about Ken.I wish we had more shows like his.
I cant listen to Steve Wright anymore.I dont know how he gets away with it.
I tried listening to Simon Mayo. That was so boring.
My problem is I cannot stand commercial radio.

The ones I have tried play two or three songs then several adverts.
My favourite is Radio Two,but the type of shows I like are scarce,so I go online and listen to things like Last FM and some internet stations.

I have to agree with above post I hate commercial radio like a lot of ppl and sadly even though we pay the license fee the BBC seem to not cater for the 30+ audience which is annoying. Another thing that really gets me annoyed is most stations seem to go for the safe option for their presenters instead of pushing raw talent who can bring new ideas to the radio.

I'm in my late 20s and have been a regular Radio 2 listener (by choice) since I was 13/14. Initially I tuned in for the music variety and I liked Steve Wright's show too. I then started to prefer a lot of the daytime, weekend and evening shows on Radio 2 to those on Radio 1. I also found that Radio 2 was more likely to playlist new releases from artists I liked such as Paul Weller than either Radio 1 or local commercial stations.

Not enough in my opinion! Times move on and all but I remember hearing the tracks from 7+ years ago being dropped in to the usual playlist on daytime shows on Radio 1 in the early-mid 2000s and not just during features either. I don't think it would hurt to do that, particularly with the dance/urban tracks which don't sound that different from current stuff.

There were lots of great tracks that I can only ever remember hearing on Radio 1 10 years ago that commercial radio (at least in my area) won't touch even now. However, I think I'm more likely to hear a track that Radio 1 played 10 years ago on Radio 2 now and that has been the case for a while.

I noticed a degree of overlap with what were then current tracks between Radio 1 and Radio 2 10+ years ago and it has continued. For example, X Press 2 ft. David Byrne's 'Lazy' was definitely being played on both Radio 1 and Radio 2 10 years ago and it's often heard on Radio 2 now.

Richard Allinson on Saturday afternoons as one example used to use a lot of current tracks as a 'bed' including that PPK track 'Resurrection' at the time it was out.

Then you have the Crowning Music of Awesome when one of the orchestras do a lot of John barry stuff, like now.

Radio 2 is supposed to appeal to older people. In terms of new music they can play a wide mix of established artists who might not get there songs on commercial radio anymore but can on Radio 1. Like how it works you listen to some commercial station and hear a few old songs by say Deacon Blue, A-ha, Depeche Mode etc but when you want to hear a new song by them they won;t play it. At least Radio 2 can. They also are able to play new up and coming artists that don't fit on Radio 1. Like Caro Emerald, Eric Church etc and some artists may over lap and can be played on both

Plus Radio 2 has a wide mix of shows that work, Ken Bruce is an amazing broadcaster. They play good country music shows and specials like they did with CMA music fest. Trevor Nelson does a good soul show and Mark Radcliff i have heard is great.

I think Radio 2 almost pleases the over 35's cause they have shows on a wide mix of music and you can't complain for if say they do a Jazz show or ir's sounds of the 60's or there is some easy listening or big band show or even Paul O'Grady that can gain listeners who are well into there 60's and 70's or older. cause they do play songs they might like. even if some have modern music i see no problem with a Michael Buble song coming on as they could like it.

There are quite a lot of children who also enjoy listening to R2 with their parents! But are not part of the Rajar surveys.

Although Smooth also play new tracks which appeal to older listeners, but might not if the new owners (Global) change the policy to old tracks only as talked about, which will be a shame! But so far no plans for Smooth have been published. Will be interesting to also see how the new "The wireless" station works out?

For me , as a 53 year old, Ken Bruce still sounds fresh and I enjoy listening to him.

Simon Mayo's show is one of the highlights of my day (especially the confesssions) but I wish there was a bit less chat and a bit more music

The mid-day slot with Jewremy Vine is just too dull for me - but thats because of the 'current affairs' content.

Steve Wright's show just seems uninteresting now and I think it would be good to give Alex Lester a chance there.

Ken is the king of the morning shows and Alex Lester would be a vast improvement on current afternoon slot.

I'm 39 I'm obviously way out of Radio1's target audience but I still enjoy a lot of current music, but now find the policy of only current and new music too much. But then I find Radio2 mostly very dull and the music policy far too wide and it seems like it tries to please too wide an audience.
I feel there is nothing for those who want something inbetween the two stations.
6Music should really fill that gap.

I'm starting to agree, the music choice is good, the factoids are funny, but the 'old woman' and 'Barry from Watford' are just revamps of the same old joke used on radio 1 in the late 70's/ early 80's (Mr Angry anyone?)

I think 'Ask Elvis' is much funnier, whoever that guy is he is very quick, especially when a member of the public asks for a song in the style of Elvis live on the phone, and the guy just pulls it off

I used to like Steve Wright back in the 80's..... but i really cant stand his show now, especially when he sings along to the records. He's long past his sell by date.
As soon as his show starts i retune to somewhere else..... anywhere is better.

Being not quite 35 yet (32) i have to say I love radio 2 and have done for a few years. Steve Wrights and Ken Bruce's shows are great and I always like having a go at pop master even if I am not good at it.

love Jeremy Vine too. most of the time I find his topics really interesting and could listen for hours.

If you're over 30 and there's nothing on Radios 2, 3, 4 or 6 that appeals to you then I don't really think there's much more the BBC can do, to be honest.

What isn't being catered for? All except 2 of the BBC's offerings cater for the over 30s and two offer essentially pop music - 6 Music for the music fan & Radio 2 for the mainstream. Look for my thread "I don't know what I want, but I want it NOW!" which highlights the fact that there are thousands of people looking for thousands of something slightly different - they might just want an MP3 player or CD. Besides the BBC almost all the commercial stations target 30 to 50 y.o (or 45 to 70 if you listen to Gold). What is it they actually dont feature or play?

Ken Bruce is fantastic in the mornings. Superb oldies and album tracks too as well as the best of the radio 2 playlist. It was great hearing Prefab Sprout with Cars & Girls, Neil Diamond with September Morn, Clifford T Ward with Ocean's Of Love as well as new stuff by Maroon 5, Naughty with Emeli Sande, and Andy Burrows today.

Ken Bruce must stay. I absolutely love ken Bruce's show and no one can do pop master quite like him.
Btw I'm 30s!
Not bothered about Jeremy vine; he's quite likeable.
