Hi,

After my TV decided it couldn't stand me anymore and left this earth, I am looking for a new one.

I checked one out at John Lewis, what attracted me was the 5 year gaurantee on all its tv's.

well I liked this samsung

http://www.johnlewis.com/231633050/Product.aspx

or this

http://www.johnlewis.com/231560689/Product.aspx

I need a new TV cabinet thingy...

thinking of getting this

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Levv-Glass-S...7638087&sr=1-1

man this sucks

My budget is around £500.

I am looking for a "relibale" brand, whatever that means, I was expecting the CRT tv which we have to last me another ten before I had to replace it.

I am not too fussed about 3D or Freesat, etc. Has to be Full HD 1080p, with enough inputs for a xbox, ps3, dvd player, sky box and speaker system.

screen size around 37" should be cool, old tv was 28", so thats nearly 10inches jump.

what else, oh and brands, sony, samsung, panasonic, toshiba, etc.

Which are the best brands, reliable brands, etc..

what are the life of these new led tvs?

It's actually slightly more than 10" jump
The visible picture on a 28" CRT is about/just over 26.5" whereas on LCD 37" is all visible

Then look at Sony and Panasonic, who's reliability (and quality of construction) is well above the rest.

No one knows, they are too new - but the screens fail occasionally, just as with CCFL LCD, Plasma, and even CRT.

theres no such thing as an LED tv.

There are LCD tv's with LED backlighting.

There are [very expensive] OLED tv's.

Samsung ended up in court for saying they made LED tv's, when what they produced was LCD tv's with LED backlighting.

For this kind of money I would recommend one of these http://sveyo.com/2012/04/sharp-aquos-lc40le831e/ . Sharp AQUOS LC40LE831E is a 40-inch 3D smart LED TV and I think you will like it a lot. It is a bit hard to find in UK but now it is offered at eBay for £450 which is a great price for a capable TV like this one - absolutely loaded with features and just the right size.

It's a 'bit hard to find in the UK' because most retailers have stopped selling Sharp TV's due to their poor reliability and service - and because much of their range is just cheap Vestel badged sets.

This one does appear to be of Sharp manufacture though.

Considering you work in the trade Nigel don't you think your opinions need to be more backed up anti-litigation wise?

Or £549 at John Lewis with a 5 year guarantee.
JL appears to be the OP's preferred retailer and the £30 extra is worth it IMHO for peace of mind
https://www.bt.com/appsconsumeraccou...ntSuccess=true

A 5 year warranty at Amazon is £135

That would be better. Just depends how much over his budget he wants to go but a 5 year guarantee would be definitely worth it.

Thanks Nigel, Sony or Panasonic it is then.

I am not too hot on the 3D stuff, don't mind the internet wifi thing, if it allows you to browse sites other than the locked content of the TV manufacturer.

Also, would you be able to hook up external hard drives via usb to these tv's, I imagine usb sticks would be no problem.

okay, so whats the difference, led, lcd, etc. What should be the technology to go for???

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Levv-Glass-S...pd_sim_recht_7

UPDATE I like this one - http://www.johnlewis.com/231575489/Product.aspx

is it worth the extra 150 off pounds for the built in wifi, the dongle costs around £50 for the panasonic.

it has a frame rate of 400hz

One of the Sony's is around £700, is it because of the frame rate??

On that note, what makes a good TV?? what is 100hzs?? is it the refresh rate of the screen?

No offence But you really need to take a breather and re assess what you want and what youre budget is.

As you are now looking at 3D £700 plus TVs

This would meet youre original OP Specs except for the size, but you should go for biggest youre budget will buy.

I was only wondering why the sony was nearly 150 more than the rest, was it simply because of the frame rate???

also, I think I will stick with the 37", as I am not after a massive screen and a 42, and even a 40 will be a little on the big side. (I've done all the measurements)

arrrghhh...you had to didn't you.

lol.

I am really pleased with it. Had to sort out the colours to how I like them, the characters seemed to have yellow skin, which wasn't right.

I can play movies, pictures right from a usb stick. pleased with that. I know, its new for me.

now, I need a bluray player now...then its all complete.

it came with no scart connection, although did have a hdmi to scart cable, which was good.
