Microsoft work with Intel to stop Linux support on future Intel processor

http://arstechnica.com/information-t...no-linux-zone/

A one off or the first of the future of Intel processors which will not support Linux. No doubt Microsoft will also charm AMD to be Windows only too.

I hope we don't go down the road of having two platforms - Apple with their own architecture and Microsoft locking in manufacturers to Windows 8 and only Windows 8.

Whiffing of anti-competitiveness.

Theres a big difference between, not being supported and not being able to run Linux.
Its just a chip at the end of day.

Well given that at some level the OS to chip interfaces will have to be documented and a few bored geeks up for a challenge will mean that it'll happen but may take a bit longer than normal

This sounds like it could end up in another Law Suite for Microsoft and probably Intel.

They need to stop Linux working on them so that RT Surface tablets look good.
With Windows RT(Metro) versus Linux I'm sure I'd opt for Linux.

"Intel apparently offered no real explanation for its decision not to support Linux"

Work in progress or will it just work normally?
And does that Atom phone allow Linux?

"However Intel said Clover Trail "is a Windows 8 chip" and that "the chip cannot run Linux"."

"Intel is pushing Clover Trail into tablets,"

How it should be done:

AMD have said that their Hondo APU will only support Windows 8 on launch - however... they have stated you can run Linux on it.

Both Intel and AMD would be happy for Microsoft to only use x86 for tablets,

The Linux market is minute and Android is well established on ARM so helping out MS is a business decision.

I half suspect the AMD Hondo will just work but Intel's new Atom has a permanent OS lock on it.

Nintendo tried that trick of stopping developers it didn't like. But those said devs reversed engineered the thing and then built their own carts, and sold games without nintendos authority.

Nintendo didn't like that but didn't have a leg to stand on when they tried to take these game devs to court.

That is the difference, they not saying it can't, all they are saying is that they only supporting windows 8 for the moment.

I don't agree with it mind you, but at least it is better than intel getting in bed with Microsoft.

same old.

I sort of already half suspected that with them also being in smartphones they would be locked down.
I doubt the authorities can do very much whatsoever. RT like IOS is gadget, not computer and circumvents choice like we got in the Windows browser choice.

Surely only Android comes under those same European rules regarding choice of software and hardware?

This looks like a non-story to me. At the end they say Android runs on their Atom Medfield processor. What's the problem?

The thread title is highly misleading. Gives the impression that Intel are dropping support for Linux altogether!

The only part of the story that seems to be effect linux is that Intel will only officially support Windows for direct access to some of the power saving commands

http://www.osnews.com/story/26377/In...ail_processors

" Microsoft is afraid of Android on its Windows 8 tablets, because Intel has just announced that it will provide no support for Linux on its clover Trail processors. Supposedly, this chip is "designed for Windows 8". What?"
Intel has been relatively forward with its support for Linux, and I don't think the chipmaker has ever specifically said a regular x86 chip is designed for one particular operating system.

"This is, of course, all smoke and mirrors; Intel could easily detail the specifications so Linux can add support for it.......regression in the technology industry."
