I'm curious. People speak of her as if she's this legendary popstar who has set the world alight. She has a pretty voice, don't get me wrong, but I struggle to name her achievements since winning the X Factor. That was 6 years ago and I would hardly call her career glistening...
What are her milestone songs other than Bleeding Love? Yeah, people may remember Happy or Better In Time, but they're not famous hits...

Any input from anyone here?

Well considering that I barely ever hear anyone mention her or I never see her in Magazines or newspapers suggests that she is not a superstar.

Her peak was from the moment she won the X - Factor until 2009, after 2009 I barely hear anything about her or hear anyone talk about her.

I think she is appreciated more because of her true vocal talent rather than her success which by the way has been outstanding for an X Factor artist (i.e. Bleeding Love, Better In Time, Run, Happy) . Not everyone is regarded as a superstar because of their success. Some people just appreciate talent and Leona brings that talent in every performance earning her a 'superstar' profile.

Some people may speak of her like she's a superstar because well the success of her first album was superstar-level both here and abroad. Big time.

Sure her worldwide mega-level of success didn't stay with her for her second album, and I'm not a fan (in fact I had no interest in her next album at all until I heard it's lead single today), but hello ...

Spirt sold 7m copies worldwide; 3m copies in the UK alone; it went to #1 in 10 countries including the US; top ten in 9 others; Bleeding Love went to #1 in 17 countries; and again top ten in 7 more; Better In Time went top 10 in 14 countries etc; in the UK she's had 3 #1's; 8 top ten hits and 2 #1 multi-platinum albums ... it's fair to say she's achieved quite a bloody lot(!) and so she's treated like such.

Her debut album sold 7m+, Bleeding Love video has 100m+ views on YouTube, she has 3 UK #1s plus the first UK artist to get a US #1 in 20 years at the time, she's Grammy nominated and not to mention she has an amazing voice....easily the best the UK has to offer at the moment...

Even her second album did well despite the dreadful promotion. She is known around the world and IS a superstar, though she has declined a bit since her Spirit days, she's still a very relevant artist worldwide.

When you see it like that she really has achieved alot.

She is heard of in other countries from her Bleeding Love days, but she is not a superstar.

How can you say she is relevant worldwide, when she hasn't been relevant here in the UK for for at least 2 years?
Ever heard of the saying: You're only as good as your last album? Although Echo did OK here, it was a major bomb everywhere else. She needs worldwide hits again to maintain superstar status.

Her fans are still clinging on to the Spirit era, which was four/five years ago.

I think it was Bleeding Love's worldwide success. It was very impessive, especially for a reality TV contestent. And it getting to #1 in the US aswell, because UK artists hardly ever had hits there at the time. There was Viva La Vida by Coldplay aswell that year.

She opened the Hackney Weekend Olympic concert and recently performed in the Birds Nest stadium. Echo did not bomb, it was a step down from Spirit, but most artists would kill for those kind of sales. I do agree she needs something to reassert herself, but she's hardly irrelevant.

Yes, and she badly needs the exposure because she has been away so long.


Apart from the UK and Ireland, where was Echo a major hit?


OK, so you go around the streets of London, LA and New York and everyone is talking about Leona Lewis?

Echo went top 10 in Switzerland, Austria, top 20 in US, Canada, Spain, Sweden and Germany, and went Platinum across Europe. Hardly the flop you are painting it to be....

The US not so much, but she has been promoting worldwide even with no new material to release, she was a guest judge on X Factor Australia and UK, and her album is always high in the pre-order charts, so a lot of people are anticipating her return.

Yes, it may have charted in the top ten in those markets, but how many did it sell? IIRC it lasted 2 or 3 weeks in the Billboard Hot 100.

She's as good as finished. Her initial success was impressive but, like almost all talent show winners, easy come easy go.

I was surprised that her song during the credits of Avatar, the biggest film of all time, didn't sustain her success.

Well some countries won't have as large a population as the UK etc, but it went Platinum across Europe and charted within the top 20 in several countries. It's not like she did a Flesh Tone by Kelis and just totally bombed everywhere. It definitely failed to replicate the success of Spirit, but that was a huge debut, but Echo was a solid album that did well, there's nothing more really to say tbh.

I like Leona but I do think her fans make out she is more successful than she actually is. She hasn't been able to sustain the success of her debut and I really don't see Trouble being a big hit either. I think her peak passed a long time ago and she will never be as big as she was in 2007 again. Bad management caused this.

Also by all accounts she did end up being nothing more than a one hit wonder in America. Natasha Bedingfield is more well known over there than Leona is.

It didn't "do well", though. It done well in the UK but nowhere else. If it done well, how come they only released two singles from it? Just because it charted in other countries doesn't mean it was a success. Rebecca Ferguson's album charted on the Billboard Hot 100 for a few weeks, does that count as a success?

'Happy' was a big underperformance worldwide, 'I Got You' flopped worldwide and underperformed in the UK, 'Collide' underperformed which means we're going back to 2008 for her last hit ('Run') and even that was a cover and was an average hit outside of the UK (and only went to #81 in the US). She also released a single 'I Will Be' in the US in January 2009 that completely combed (but her fans are claiming it was only a radio release or something even though it got TV promo and a video), 'Forgive Me' was a decent sized hit in Europe but underperformed in the UK, 'Better In Time/Footprints In The Sand' was a big hit in Europe and then of course 'Bleeding Love' was massive worldwide.

So really 'Bleeding Love' was the peak of her career and that was about four/five years ago.

That song was one big mess. It was apparently going to be her 'My heart will go on' but they never sent it to radios, gave it a crappy video, barely promoted it if they even did at all and eventually never released it because Leona & her label didn't want it released..something to do with her second albums release would have clashed with it. What they should have done is included it on the album and released as the lead/second single.

Although I agree that Leona peaked back in the 'Spirit' era she is in no way irrelevant. Every artist has their peak era but just because they have peaked doesn't make them irrelevant.

She isn't treated like a superstar and please don't say her fans are clinging onto her Spirit success. We, the fans, know more than anyone that Leona needs her third album to be a commercial success. We're very aware that for the last few years things have started to go downhill.

But as for her successes, she has plenty. And to this day she still performs at concerts across the world, so whilst she's not as popular as she was with Spirit, she's certainly not as irrelevant as some people make out.

Realistically she is not treated like a superstar. The whole superstar persona was influenced by the likes of Simon Cowell re X Factor at its peak continusly referring to her as a worldwide superstar. And her performances on X Factor with the voice booming Worldwide Superstar Leona Lewis. When actually Simon over hyped her making the whole echo era really splat egg on his face. The whole farce of Glassheart takes it into a new league of poor management. The fact that the album was originally penned for release well over a year ago had promotional art work and tentative release dates penned all over including her own website to then be pulled on at least two to three occasions. It says a lot when it's gone back into the studio to be reworked twice and then the original first track pulled all together from the track listing. Any anticipation really has gone from this album and thoughts must be how bad was it that it's needed so much reworking. They really should have dropped the whole Glassheart project and renamed the whole thing with a new identity.
In my opinion the other problem is Leona lacks personality. Yes she is really nice but that's it she has no stage presence. Yes she has good singing voice but so do loads of people who never make it big. To have longevity you have to have a complete package not just be a nice person.
The abysmal live Cd and tour also didn't help with the base so heavy and loud you could barely make out her vocals.
I really do wish her luck but think a few years down the line she will be married have babies and make the occasional appearance on tv or be on the cruise liners With Jane McDonald.
Her career is anything but Superstar.

she hasn't got star quality let alone 'super star' quality. That she won a show called the 'X factor' is ironic. I'm amazed she sold the amounts she did while the hype was so high.

She seems to be a DS favourite though and she makes some people happy. I can't argue with that.

I'm not gonna sit here and say Leona Lewis is a worldwide superstar because I'm a fan of her, But by the time Spirit had wrapped up, I'd have said she was then. When it came to Echo, I'd say it started of alright with Happy but with a half arsed second single and dashing the album after that, it really has set her back.

I'd say she's still relevant in music today, she's just lacking behind a lot. When I look at the 'top females' in music at the moment, you can't deny that most of them are getting by on style over substance (bar Beyonce) But at least Leona is someone who gets by on talent alone.

A lot of people think Leona is done now, but I still think there is hope for her to climb back to the top. Even if you take away the US aspect of things, Leona is still one of the biggest selling females in the UK.

And like others have said she has achieved quite a lot in her career, for someone who came off a reality show

Globally success first album, Brit nominations, Grammy nominations, performed at the Beijing Olympics, performed at Nelson Mandellas birthday, Sang the theme for Avatar, and even though 1D have now done well, I still reckon Leona is the face for XFactor going worldwide
