Why does it take a tragedy for a decent song to get to number one?

It took the Bradford football ground fire tragedy in May 1985 to make another version of You'll Never Walk Alone by The Crowd to reach No1 for two weeks in June that year, also with input from Gerry Marsden. Not to mention after the initial tragedy on 15th April 1989 when Ferry Cross The Mersey was recorded again by Marsden and mates and made No1.

Are Gerry & The Pacemakers, You'll Never Walk Alone seriously expected to be Britain's No1 by Sunday evening? I'm amazed.
