Think most networks are charging steep upfront prices because the sheer cost of the phone,
Tmobile are doing £36 a month (full monty) and £109 up front but if you want a lower upfront cost they put the monthly charge up there also doing £41 a month £29 for the phone also, I think its £39 a month and £100 for the phone on o2 |

What I don't quite understand is that the difference in price between the 16gb and 32gb versions from Apple is £70. Yet nearly all the tariffs I've seen have the difference in upfront cost as more than that.
E.g T-Mobile Full Monty (£36pm) - 16gb £109, 32gb £219 VF £33pm tariff - 16gb £149, 32gb £169 How is that justified? |

Vodafone red plan doesn't seem to bad for a deal
£99 for 16gb or £209 for the 32gb - still a eye watering £110 extra when Apple is only £70 difference £37 a month with unlimited calls and text plus 1gb of data and depending where you work if you can get the the employee discount scheme makes it even better |

T Mobile seemed better to me - 2000 min, unlimited texts and data for £36pm and £109 up front?

Three do some really good SIM Only 1 month and 12 month tariffs if you are willing to fork out for the phone, plus you won't by tied into a 2 year contract.
I've decided with buying the phone outright and going with one of their cheapest 1 month tariffs: 'Ultimate Internet 200', that gives 200 minutes (plenty for my usage), 5000 texts and unlimited data per month for just £12.90 plus I can decide to alter the tariff whenever I like or just drop it completely and return to PAYG. |

I'm considering a move to 3 also, so would be grateful for any praise / warnings about them before I decide.

If you're in an area with no 3 coverage but it roams onto a partner network (Orange?) then you will get just basic voice and text services and no data at all. Not even crappy GPRS. Indoor coverage is ropey. Expect poor reception inside, depending on the make-up of the building. In my office I get 2 bars or less, friend's house 1 bar in the lounge if I'm lucky. Pretty much every supermarket - forget it once you go inside (1 bar to no service/searching...). Outdoor reception is fair - it's not bad but again some places have nice 1 bar reception (just watch your battery go flat quicker...). Works well-ish out in the sticks but ymmv. I wouldn't get a phone with 3. For my £36/£32 a month I would expect much better coverage and wouldn't get a phone with them on that basis. Currently I'm on one of their SIM only packages, so I'm happy to ride the gotchas above for the price I'm paying (not a lot!). |

We have all mix of androids and iphones in our buildings on different networks, and the only ones that get a decent 3G signal are those on the three network. |

In areas where Three think their own coverage is still a bit dodgy, they have left 2G roaming on.

Yeah I was expecting better from Tesco, those plans aren't even really competitive against any of the MNOs

I'm very tempted to ditch O2 for Three when my contract is up next month.
O2, Vodafone, Orange, and T-Mobile are all very similar when it comes to costs and benefits, but Three's tariffs and handset prices seem *very* good, especially if you want the 32GB or 64GB model. What puts me off is the horror stories about coverage and customer service... |

Of course, there will be areas without coverage - but this is the same for all networks. As for customer service - it can be a bit hit and miss depending on how easy it is to fix the problem you're having. If it is something simple, they answer quickly, are very polite and will get it sorted with minimal fuss. But if it is something more complicated, then it can get a bit frustrating. However, their Twitter team (@ThreeUKSupport) is very good and should sort out any more complicated issues you have. |

I think the best thing to do would be to pick up a PAYG Three sim (you can order them free from three.co.uk) and see what coverage is like in the areas you frequent.
I've travelled many miles around the country and only found a couple of black spots. Everywhere else has 3G. |

Don't forget Quidco cashback on the One Plan (£96.88). Three price for 32GB iPhone 5 on One Plan is £89 up front & £39/month i.e. £14 on top of SIM-only One Plan. Total cost is therefore £329. If you add the fee for unlocking then you are getting an unlocked 32GB iPhone for around £250 cheaper than an unlocked iPhone from Apple.
