I have a friend with a 37AV555D which is 4 years old and has a fault. In short, it won't switch on at all. It gives a stand by light, but will not come on from there at all. Occasionally it will go to green as if it is coming on, but then it goes back to red with no picture having appeared.

I was wondering if this is a known fault, is it repairable and does anyone have a ball park figure of what it wmaycost to fix? Would he be better off replacing the set perhaps?

Any help would be appreciated.

I would say it's 90% likely to be failed electrolytic capacitors in the PSU. the most common fault in electronic stuff these days. I've done two in the last week, though in my case both 4 year old Technika sets. 3-4 years seems to be the life of the average rubbish capacitor used in a lot of stuff these days.

The cost of the parts to repair it is likely to be a few £ plus whatever labour charge your local tv repair man charges.

If that's all it is, I would probably charge about £30, but things are cheaper up here than darn sarf.
